I do recognise the phenomenon - but my experience is that this is usually people who don't actually like music, as such!!

So - they are nostalgic for their youth and this stuff was the musical wallpaper for that and therefore has strong associations with it in their memories!

So - when they are listening to the "hits of yesteryear" they are not thinking about how that is a neat chord progression or things like that - but rather : that was playing when I scored with that hot person of the opposite sex at the school dance - that was playing,the last time I was actually energetic and lively on the dance floor etc. etc.

So - nothing to do with music as such, whatsoever!!

Most of the public does not listen to music or go to concerts because they care or even understand much about music. It has more to do with social excitement and memories.

I like the example someone used that music is the wallpaper that decorated our youth. For many people, especially of my age, that is what draws them to concerts. Re-live the fun days.

Actually, people really ARE that stupid and shallow. And the situation is at least that bad. And Clear Channel is actively destroying whatever remnants of individuality it can track down.

It's all hopeless and screwed up. And it's all going to get worse.

Now, having said that, sure there is still good music being made out there. It's just that it doesn't get promoted, because it is so much easier to promote crap. Isn't it an amazing coincidence that all of the talented people in the music biz are attractive teens. Oh sure they can't write their own music, but look at how well they dance while they lip-sync! We could make a fortune on these kids! And while we do, we can continue to play real music in dingy little dead-end clubs to small audiences of very inebriated and utterly disinterested strangers.

Okay maybe I'm a little cynical. But read my sig. It's just my opinion, but I'm right.

Bowie changes with every album. You are truly missing out on some great music. I like his newer stuff much more than his older stuff.

Changes... I get it!!!

I just don't like Bowie's voice (just as I don't like Ozzy's ) so everything I'm familiar with from "The Laughing Gnome" to "China Girl" really doesn't make me want to search out anything else by him. But as you said, his stylistic changes from The Laughing Gnome to Changes to Fashion to The Little Drummer Boy to Let's Dance- it covers a lot of ground, just ground I don't choose to walk.
