oh how the tables have turned. I remember a time when it was nothing but someone slapping for 5 minutes straight.

It is kinda funny how these days we have a sea of Instagram and Youtube bassists who share a constant stream of shredding content, but they're not the ones getting called for sessions. From what I see in the trenches, once you "brand" yourself that way, you set yourself up for lots of artists and producers not seeking you out.

Flashy is the new skillful.

Doesnt matter if you play the hardest songs in the world with perfect technique, some dude drumming on his bass and tapping where its not needed will get 100x the views.

I mean I dont LIKE it, but it's showmanship. The new "radio single" is a 15 second tiktok where the band dances. The new hanging posters is getting an AI to make a simple locally targetted IG ad.

Times change. I dont like it either, but what I found helpful is to just remember the fact that I play for myself. For my own enjoyment. For those perfect moments where creativity meets skill and challenge, and you disappear into the flow of spontaneous creation.

10 second clips cant capture that, nor provide it. Only the old ways of practise and focus can.

"Modern" bass sounds have been around for over 50 years now - Larry Graham and John Entwistle messed things up for you a very long time ago. Most would consider the (many) albums they sold to be "music". Sorry.

I'm old, too, I just haven't atrophied musically - yet.
