Once a 20 something asked me if I ever heard of a guy Eric Burdon.
Another sad she had sort of heard Of Led Zeppllin.
Another was unaware of anything Mcartney before Wings. Inr estrospect, I can't believe she was serious.

I see more than a few of these vids of young(er) cats wailing away on their bass. Like most things, some of them are really saying something, and some are qualifying events for The Bass Player Olympics (or at least a NAMM shot).
I marvel at the gifts and the work it takes to do that, and most of it are chops out past mine.
These are modern times and I'm an old guy, but if we're smart, the learning from each other should run in both directions.

Music, even seemingly 'simple' music, does occasionally benefit from a fast precise run. If I'm auditioning bassists, all else being equal I'll take the one who can do it over the one who can't every time.
But if you need something to do when you're not yelling at clouds, try tilting at windmills. It's joyous.
There is much to be said for tasteful selection of notes, and knowing which notes not to play, and when not to play notes at all.
I always admired "The Edge" for his guitar pieces not because he was any kind of technical wizard, but because he laid out tasty chops. I prefer tasty to technical any day. To once again quote Zappa: "Anyone can learn to play fast, you can practice that. I say, surprise me!"
I'm happy to agree with that totally valid opinion. I simply don't have any interest in Youtube bass demo videos for exactly these reasons. Love watching videos of bands performing on Youtube but have no interest in watching Bass Wizards slapping and shredding, that's about as relevant to me as watching a flower-arranging video.
The upside of ignoring Youtube demos is it's probably saved me a fortune in GAS.

Cats like Geddy Lee, Cliff Burton, Louis Johnson, Jaco, etc, etc, etc might disagree. But that's okay! We all aspire to our own interests and goals. Some of us will get off on copping Hang On Sloopy and some of us will get off on copping Digital Man.
To be clear, I'm not really talking about "solos" because I've never been interested in them on bass. But I'm certainly interested in very complicated "fancy" bass lines (when I'm able to actually play them). But also, to be fair, there are tons of jazz dudes on upright bass that can play solos that I can't even comprehend and plenty of people listened to them.

Thanks for posting this and introducing me to the Nova Twins! They are great! Just watched a YouTube of them performing "Glory" at Glastonbury.
I was making no statement regarding my musical tastes, approach to musical creativity, type of music I play, or how much care and craft people should put into their bass lines in actual songs. I was poking at the over-the-top antics, the over-preponderance of slap, when it's but a facet of bass, and yes, the tone, of most bass videos I've peeked at.
Truth is, I only ever check something out, for a minute or so, because it's been recommended online, on this forum , about the only time I'd spend even those few minutes. I'm way more into crafting whole original arrangements and would be much more likely to be studying up on say, how to get good drum sounds in my recordings or some such.
I've only ever played originals and original-oriented music. I've been making up my own basslines all my life.
Oh yeah, and Louis Johnson is what I've always considered the standard for good slap. I ain't totally opposed
