On/off switch

This is one of the most ridiculous threads I've ever seen on this site. The thought of having a killswitch installed on a bass for this purpose is like getting a tattoo on your body to tell you to eat food to stay alive.

+1 what many others have said -- learn to unplug your bass.

Agreed. We're all used to using a switch to turn something off rather than unplugging it but if unplugging is the only way to turn something off then it shouldn't be that difficult to get into that habit. Even back when I had room to leave my bass on a stand, I never left it plugged in to the amp...and that was a passive bass.

Dollar store batteries are actually more expensive per milli-amp-hour because they have so little capacity. In a test of AA batteries from Dollar Store/harbor freight all the way up to Lithiums, the cheapest battery per milli-amp-hour was the Amazon Basics IIRC. Anyway here's the YT video which I think uses if not outright science at least a pretty good practical methodology.



 
Thanks man I didn't know the cable could kill the battery. Going to train myself to pull the cable out and maybe that will work. My guitar uses 9 v. Batteries. They aren't cheap.

That's the best bet.
In addition... leaving a cable plugged in is calling for trouble. One day someone will trip, your bass will fall, you'll break a plug in the socket or damage the socket... and Murphy's Law says it will happen at a gig :)

Unplugging is always a good idea, regardless whether it's a passive or an active bass.

The OP didn't realise that the plug is the switch, and he thought he needed to turn down the knobs. This thread served for him to find out how it actually works. I think its a great thread that has helped at least one person.

We can discuss now which bass is best for metal if you like ;)
 
O have a ibanez bass and it has a pre amp with active pick ups. I keep leaving the thing on and it kills the battery.

I had the same problem. I solved it by playing passive basses.
I don't miss the EQ knobs as I have a set of those on my amp rig.
If there's something wrong with my tone I know it's definitely not a dead battery.
As a matter of fact, I don't even think about batteries anymore!

Sometimes I leave my amp on though...
 
Unplugging active basses to save the battery is a pain in the *$$. I would much rather have a switch. And not just a switch - I want an LED that changes colour on diminishing battery level. If you can get robot tuners and basses with onboard synths why not a simple on/off switch with a battery condition light?
