My point is that I use my RA for "upright" things, and the Fodera for everything else. So I find that I can get by with just a 4-string PJ for a lot of stuff but again, depends on the details.

Dingwall ABZ (passive only) & ABII's (active/passive) get a lot love for the broad sounds you can get.
a boutique P/J of some sort. Sadowsky would be an excellent choice, especially if you don't have the cash for an Alembic.
Given that, I would say a modern jazz bass, maybe with humbuckers instead of single coils. Someone mentioned a Roscoe Beck, I think that's a cool idea. Coil taps are fun! I have a Warwick $$ 5 that does it all. I know people are kinda love/hate with wicks around here though. It kinda depends on if you want a jackknife bass or a one-awesome-trick bass. Because you could get by with just a good ol' P. Next question is do you want a 4 banger or a 5er?
You should probably spend some time checking stuff out and see what feels right. I dunno about your area, but usually you can find a bass store or two around town, in addition to the big retailers/mom&pop shops. If you've got a 3-4g budget, you can buy pretty much anything you want, unless you want a pristine 1967 jazz bass that was owned by a little old lady and only taken to the grocery store once a week.
No one can give you the answer. For me, the one bass is a lakland as they are very versatile, for you it might be something totally different. Find a good bass heavy store that you can go in and try as many as possible.

I just picked up an older Ken Smith CR5 with the old 2 band preamp. It can sound like the classic "Smith" sound, but I can dial in quite a bit of different tones using the pickup blend and hand placement. I can get real growly, then warmer, and of course clear with lots of high end. Plays like butter also.
I'd recommend going to a guitar shop & playing some different basses to get an idea of what features/ options you'd like to have. $3-4k is a good amount of money to get a quality electric. I'd recommend checking out Lakland (USA), Fbass, Ken Smith, MTD, Tobias (pre-Gibson) & STR. I've played all these makes & owned a few & I can tell you IME that anyone of which will cut it in just about any situation & is practically a no brainer.

I'm not special by any means, I'm sure a ton of people on this board know what I mean. Your ear becomes more developed over time, it's just how it is.
