Double Bass One "dull" string. Cure?

I played a rehearsal last night, and I think that the harshness in tone that I've been hearing is simply a matter of practice room acoustics. The warm up room and hall completely changed the way I experienced the sound production. The bass sounded incredibly big and mature in the expanse of space. The overtones receded beneath the big core sound of the instrument. The bass even felt more responsive, probably because I wasn't working as hard to get a good perceived sound.

In the practice room, green and harsh. In the hall, big, dark and mature. An incredible difference, and an effect that I'd really forgotten about after so many years away from playing. Probably explains why I always got so frustrated in the practice room.

did you ever decide exactly what the issue was with th A string?

I think perhaps it was an issue of breaking it in. It responds under the bow and sounds much better now. Played my bass in Invalid Link Removed, and it sounds incredible. Very satisfying from a player's standpoint. (Now, if my hands would only do what they're supposed to.)

I found that taking more care winding the string on the tuner helped me, neatly wound not crossing it self
