One half stack to rule them all...(guitard content).

I'm assuming 15" speakers are boomy and flabby on guitar because I've had a 2x15" cab powered by a Sovtek Mig 60, a Music Man 1x15" combo and a similar era Yamaha that I ran this exact set of pedals through.

ALL boomy, over-exaggerated low end that was not tight and responsive for thrash/fast metal guitar. This from someone who used to and usually still does dime the bass knob on a Marshall.

El ten eleven uses a GK rig for double duty. Check those guys out.

Also I play both instruments, I recommend finding a Genz Benz 212 guitar cab. My guitar player uses one and it has some of the best bass response I've ever heard from a guitar cab.

It's called a Genz Benz 212 g-flex. It's ported. It's an amazing cabinet. Was designed for metal. We use it for super detuned metal guitar. It's also lightweight. Would most likely handle bass (don't know for sure) and can be found for around 200 bones. Run that with the amp of your choice.

you must have missed this post, or only saw the part about the NV412. Perhaps read it again, and maybe even watch his video's from youtube. From what I can tell, this particular person might be the IDEAL person to get ideas from. I can tell you I have heard his guitar tone with Bag End 15's and it is quite good.

Don't dismiss a 15 based on size alone. If the tone doesn't work for you no problem, but it seems like it just might work. He also suggest the bag end 12's, which come alone or in pairs.

I checked out the Berg via this post. Was unfamiliar with the brand. Bag end doesn't tend to be cheap, and I realized I was going to get a bunch of non-budget-friendly suggestions. So I Froogled around, saw the TC Electronics cab. Was pretty much the only sub-$500 bass 212 that came up. Figured some might get the gist that I do NOT have the money for $1000+ cabs before shipping.

I was hoping to see some "try a 210, 310, or 410, they're very available usef, and are good enough for bass but probably not as boomy/muddy as a typical larger speaker might be for guitar purposes" type of responses.

But it seems like a few only want to push me towards a speaker size I absolutely don't want, while making "typical bassnozzle" comments about bassy guitar tones, and acting like I'm some new jack high schooler who doesn't know what they're talking about, THEN acting like *I* have a bad attitude and don't listen to what others have to say.

Bmore, not referring to you per se - your suggestion wasn't bad nor unhelpful nor disrespectful. Thank you.

This is a good example of a helpful post. Not some metal hating non-guitarist with no experience with the concept who wants to walk out the trite "ruining music with bassy guitar" horsepoopie.

FYI I was just listening to Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist" on my smartphone's speaker last night. Despite the audio handicap I can CLEATLY hear all the bass parts despite the downtuned guitars, 90's production etc. If you "can't be heard" maybe it's due to tin ears or a lack of audio engineering capability, or both.

I'll definitely check a cab like that out at that price. Thanks for the suggestion and trying to do something helpful rather than dime a dozen internet snark.

FWIW, Bag Ends come up for sale here pretty regularly and the S12/S15D are usually in the $225 - $275 range which I think would be in your budget for a pair.

Here's the link I mentioned before just in case:

Um, yeah, no **** right...anyone wants to chime in with an example of thrash/death/speed/non-doom-metal guitar playing through 15s and sounding good to excellent let me know, but even Korn played through 12s. I'd say Meshuggah but I think they DI into the PA live now.

Being detuned to A, having a pratically unlimited budget, having the ear of top shelf producers engineers and guitar techs, and having made millions off their (not great IMO) sound WITHOUT 15S, is no match for the TB "just stop playing silly metal guitar and play jazz blues rnb reggae etc like we do, and just buy this expensive but ill-matched to the purpose gear because it's what we're GASing for" 'brain trust'.

Again, 15s might be great for bass. But I'm specifically looking for something double duty worthy. Getting a 215 that does the job just as well aurally but fails my budget constraints is going to do nothing for me, because I can't afford it. I don't drive a 20 year old automatic Benz wagon because I don't know what an E63 AMG or CTS-V are, or are too unintelligent/uncultured/inexperienced to appreciate those vastly nicer examples of the breed, it's because I'm ~30-70k dollars short of being abke to obtain them.

Decent bass cab, Great metal guitar cab!

Now that TC has brought prices to more reasonable levels, metal guitarists can use this cab for low tunings and sick distortion. If you despise the flabby flatulent sound of ported cabs... (as you should) ...then plug that rear port with a cylindrical foam block. That will also keep spiders from infesting your cab when you're not looking. You might not think spiders could stand to live in a loudspeaker. You'd be wrong. Inside any rectangular box like this, there are nodes where sound frequencies cancel out because of standing waves. Any creature as small as a spider will immediately migrate to those places when the music starts. Why do I write about spiders? When you get bit by a brown recluse that lived inside your ported cab, you'll understand. The resonant frequency of these Eminence speakers is around 52 to 56 hz, which is not low enough for a great bass speaker without a ported cab, but is plenty low enough for guitarists, even when using drop tunings or 7 strings. Bottom line... you can make this thing sound great for metal distortion guitar. Plug that hole, then rock and roll.

I never liked the Bag End S15 for guitar much. 5KHz is just not enough top end for me. I'd like to try a D12 for both guitar and bass some time. I've heard Bag End will stick a power amp in any if their cabs for you. A powered D12 with different pre-amps for guitar and bass might be a really killer setup.

i think you answered your own question. PA style cab with the right DI for Each and a Power Amp setup.

you think those bands you listed aren't playing live shows with their sound going through huge PA rigs using 15" speakers? that is the sound the crowd hears. they are reproducing what they are being fed.

I find my Bag End S15D's to have plenty of top end, as well as massive wallop, as you can hear in the video link I posted. The 12D's should have even more top end.

Just to reinforce the point that speaker size means nothing by itself, here's a quick clip of my new high gain head I designed and built from scratch through a couple of my proto cabs which have 10" speakers - 10's can't possibly sound good for high gain, can they? - everybody in metal uses 12's!

http://youtu.be/cjdk3bUTx5w

These aren't conventional speakers, but they absolutely can and do kick the poop out of the two Marshall oversized 412's and Recto 2x12's loaded with EV's that I have sitting right next to them. By the same token, there are some 15's that sound great for guitar.

Point is that pro's are as clueless about gear as anyone else, as are most of the manufacturers, especially in the guitar realm, who often crank out the same old stuff with the same old basic design mistakes. There's lot of low hanging fruit in my opinion - I've got a bunch of bass and guitar amps and cabs of my own design and build that will own anything on the market - I know, because I either own, have owned, or played most of it.
