One more reason I am a mediocre player.

I stick with being mediocre the old-fashioned way: I'm lazy and I don't like to practice.
Doc that man is preaching the truth! When I was a young, immature player I was all about playing fast and trying to be "impressive ". As I grew as a player I firmly fell into the "less is more" camp. When you choose your words wisely they always have more impact.
I think since 80's and 90's a lot of the dynamics have disappeared in pop music or modern music.
I've had discussions about this with friends and I always point out the need to go listen to Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East ( as an example). One of the things that makes that album so good is the Allman Brothers use of dynamics throughout their music.
