One of those old fashioned "which bass" threads but with experience

Before the searchbar comments roll in I just want to say I've tried haha,

So I've been playing bass a few years now and as of a year ago I've started gigging, up till about six months ago I'd been using friends basses and amps because I didn't have the cash, then when i ran into some i went out and bought a nice Shuttle 6.0 with a 410 cab, and also a yamaha, an rbx 250 i believe, bolt on neck, single P pup, and it worked quite well to begin with, but as I've been growing as a musician and expanded what I've been playing I've realized it's just not going to cut it, it has very little response from the high end and even mids lack a bit, also it is nigh but un-slappable, and i mean i dont slap atm, but if and when i decide to learn i want a bass that is going to stand up to the job, right now i play mostly classic/hard rock with a few other classics and oldies thrown in, I also noodle in blues, because even if its just using the blues scale as a basis for solos and fills i find its just beautiful sounding, anyways i digress haha, pretty much I'm asking whats a relatively versatile bass, which will serve me at least for a while, while my knowledge increases, and if it looks cool while doing it then ok budget is probably 4-600 not alot i know but I'm saving up for music production school and its really all i can part with without feeling too bad about it haha

Also i found a relatively cheap sound gear sr 500 any thoughts or expirience on this bass?

Get a 5 string jazz bass. All the tones you could ever need and fits any style. Standard MIM fenders go for that new and if you're lucky you could get a MIA 5 string fender for 600 or close to it and I believe spending the extra money is worth it. Ibanez makes solid basses but they're current line up mostly doesn't interest me. I'd look into their ATK series. Also Yamaha is blowing out their 4 and 5 string PJ basses at 299. Best buy new out there. Yamaha BB425 5-String Electric Bass Guitar: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend Do yourself a favor and get one. If I didn't have as many basses as I do now I'd get one. I'm even considering getting one to have as a loaner bass if my friends need it and I've played them in stores and been impressed.

I agree on the Jazz bass. It will certainly cover everything you seem to be looking to do and will certainly allow you to tap into a greater range of sounds.

I can't comment on that Ibanez as I've never played one.
