One Piece Tops

Wow that is expensive...maybe I should snatch up the piece of it down here by me. Its not that large, but its close. And for 1/3 the price... I bet I could get it for 900 if I walked in with the money... But that is too far out of reach right now.

The local Rockler has the most beautiful slab of waterfall bubinga that I have ever seen. It is absolutely huge! I keep asking the guy to sell me a piece of it, but he wont cut it. I would love to buy the whole thing but I do not have the 1200 bucks for it. Sure is purdy though!

Rockler's supplier is West Penn Hardwoods (at least it was last year at this time). That is where their WF Bubuinga is coming from......or at least did. WP hardwoods, from what I've been told has had a few problems which they have been working through, although I couldn't tell you if these issues have yet been resolved. I don't use Rocky at WP for much of my wood so my info may be dated

In any case, WF Bubinga is much less expensive from WP Hardwoods....They don't give Rockler much of a wholesale discount.

As for one piece tops, I built a P-Bass with 1 piece front and back from Big Leaf Maple Burl in 2003 or so with no issues.....It does look pretty cool as a 1 piece surface. I'm getting ready for another build and may use 1 piece Jarra burl or maybe 1 piece Red Mallee Burl.

I've attached a pic of the P-Bass that I'm sure many of you have seen before.

I think one-piece tops look much better than bookmatched, more natural or something.

Several years ago I got this one from Gilmer for $385 shipped from Oregon to Maryland. They rarely have pieces this size with this much figure - but given the economy, Gilmer and other places may be more inclined to cross-cut the large slabs.

This one has long since been resawn, parted out, partially sold and stacked & stickered in the personal stash.
