Online band rehearsal

Ughhhh. Weird times were living in these days. My band rehearsal was cancelled tomorrow over Covid19 concerns. I was wondering if any of you fine folks here are having online band rehearsal successfully. What software /programs work best and what hardware is required. Might as well take advantage of pending down time at home. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences. Be safe!

All my research isn’t showing much. Almost like the idea died 5 years ago. Our band radius is about 70 mile max. Anyone successfully using a virtual rehearsal program less than 100 mile radius?

I have been looking into the same thing for the same reason. Surprising that there isn’t much written lately about this. Also within 100 mile radius but with shelter in place on the horizon having a virtual option would be cool.

tried nimjam and to a degree its ok. But latency over 7000km is a killer.

I think most of us have since then learned that this is near impossible to do.

If people (meaning the entire band) are super tech savvy, have top notch internet connections, patience, and all the right equipment and downloads - it MIGHT be possible.

Otherwise its about learning one's parts, recording and sending them to each other and then either putting them all together into a nice video, or just practicing alongside each other's videos. And yeah, I realize the thread is from March .

Yep. Still a no go. We tried every combination and permutation under the sun. Still couldn’t get around the latency. Physics sure is a pesky and persistent opponent!

We’re doing asynchronous video “jams” now.

Both my bands are using JamKazam. The only issue that we have had is my Internet equipment needed to be replaced. We have very little latency issues. One band is a U2 tribute and the other is a cover band. It has really helped us to work out our parts together keeping social distancing.

I'm using Ear Trumpet Condenser Microphone for vocals, to pick up amplified bass, and chat and a Focusrite Solo interface and Ethernet connection. I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and have my bass connected through my Helix and a vocal mic as well. I am using a Mac Mini connected by wire to my network. Works great, well at least after replacing my internet modem and router

I've replaced my modem and router as well. May I ask what your latency? I've found that I have to ask someone in a session to hover over my colored dot to get a reading on Total Latency.
You are able to play together without the latency lag?

Our latency runs around 20 to 30. 3 of us live within 20 miles of each other and one of the members lives about 60 miles away. We don’t have much issues. The biggest thing is to make sure you are using a cable for your internet connection not wireless.

What we have been doing is when some of us can get together we record the practice sometimes just with a digital recorder off the mixer. Then I'll edit out any tracks that we want to work on and upload them to the online Band Lab app. That way the other members can access the track to work on and add their own part if they want and share it. It's pretty simple, you just create a band in the app and add your band members emails. Mixing capabilities are pretty basic, but for a simple solution to share works in progress it's pretty cool. It's also free... I've also been using the Band Lab Cakewalk DAW and I've been pretty pleased with their app.

i have no idea how that could possibly work. You might as well individually just practice to recordings if you want to stay sharp. but how you could all play on line at once and make that worthwhile is beyond me

After a couple of months of working with Jamkazam, I finally give up. The Latency fluctuates, because the packets need to be buffered to collect all of them, put them in order before they are released as audio. (My limited understanding) sometimes one player will lose audio, recieved, sending or both, requiring leaving the session and returning. It's an exercise in frustration.

Anyone here have a band where you can really share ideas back and forth and write, but only practice here and there?

I work 2nd shift. I also have 3 kids under 10...life can be busy. Dropping the job isn’t an option it’s a very nice wage considering what I do, and it’s in a union.

Just did 1 rehearsal via teleconference. Was more productive than expected
