Hey All,
So, I've had plenty of in-person studio experience in the past but I just completed my first fully-online, paid bass session for a random client that was referred to me by a friend. Upon initial contact he included an mp3 mix of the acoustic guitar and drum tracks and asked me for a quote on the bass line. Based on the little that I found online for average rates, I gave him a flat amount ($75) and we went from there.
The tune was not very difficult (mostly I/VI/IV/V with a couple change-ups) and I did a one-take rough track and then went back to overdub a couple flubs and some spots that had random "pops" (which I'm 99% sure was due to my DAW's bitrate being too low, which I fixed). The whole thing was turned around within a couple days, from first contact to the sending of the final files. I'd estimate that my actual work time start to finish (listening and charting included) was maybe 1.5 to 2 hours. The good news is that he seems to be thrilled with the final product and says that he would be glad to send me more work in the near future.
I'd be very interested in hearing others' experiences with paid online sessions, and what billing structure was used (hourly vs. per track), time spent, gear tips/shortcuts, issues/obstacles you had to overcome, whatever. Any and all details are appreciated!
