Only One Bass?

I think about this a lot, which one would be my only bass if I only had 1. I guess it would have to be my Warwick Corvette Standard. It doesn’t get played all that much these days but it’s been around the longest and has a sound that I can’t get with anything else. I would only ever go down to 1 if I wasn’t gigging though. I always bring 2 to a gig.

I was a two-bass guy for years when I was mainly playing BG. A Precision and a fretless Jazz Bass Special (PJ). They did everything I needed, and I always had a backup. Now that I'm mostly playing DB, my BG stable has inexplicably grown to 5. I pretty much only ever play my 70s Jazz at this point when it comes to BG. As long as I can keep my DB, I could live with a single BG.

But you haven't done that, now, have you?

I've got a nice 5-string.

If I had to have just and only one bass, I'd be happy with this 5-string. Long as I could still do a couple mods and all. The necessity of having one bass means I'd make compromises sonically and visually (it's a beautiful bass though, mind you), so I'd learn to live with the difficulties of getting a split-coil tone from a pair of Bartolinis, etc etc. I'd go with the 5-string, though, because it'd offer me the most chances to play bass for fun and also for money in live settings and while just tooling around with music at home.

Mine is an Ibanez Cerro SRSC805 in the DTF finish (and yes, the finish acronym makes me chuckle). I don't have the imagination to think about how I'd magically end up with some incredibly super ultra custom thing from wherever and what it would be; if I had to have just one from my current stable, that'd be the one.

I rehearsed on it tonight and it slayed. I would be happy.

If I had spend a career in one certain band playing basically one kind of music in one kind of venue, I could probably narrow it down to one. At least, one KIND of bass and backups (because stuff happens on the road, wear and tear, etc). But I'm currently taking all the work I can get, and work is slow, and diverse. There are times when a P with flats will do, and that's what I prefer. But certain situations I need a bass with rounds for at least ONE song per gig, and I don't like to swap instruments onstage (I almost always use ONE BASS per gig) . Or, I might need a 5. Or I might need a fretless. And do they get by with flats or do I need rounds? I hate constantly swapping strings so I keep basses around with each. And I need my DB for jazz gigs, because I get called for playing that specific instrument. Just on my regular Sunday AMs at church, every week is different; different personnel, different songs, same songs different arrangements, different vibes (from acoustic country to full out rock to synthy electronic sounds). Seems like its always something different and I've responded by keeping more instruments around than my wife would prefer!

It's funny to come across this thread now. I have an unofficial/official rule about having a max of 3 basses. First of all, it's killing me. My #1 bass is my American Performer Precision, which I always come back to. I use my Aerodyne Jazz for bad back days or when I want the growl from the EMG GZRs installed on it. From time to time, I just love jumping on the Ray34 Sterling by Music an for its aggressive tone. Now I'm seriously eyeing a seafoam green American Performer Jazz. Which child do I send to the orphanage? Thinking the Ray OR I treat the Aerodyne as a physiotherapy tool so that I only count the other 2 basses...I like this thread! So full of inspiring accounting techniques!

If I could only keep one of my current three it’d be the Squier. If I could get rid of al three and buy just one it’d be the Fender Electron Green FSR Player Series P-Bass that a local music store has.

I’m not all that interested in amassing a large collection of basses. My ideal collection would be the above P-Bass and a Breedlove Fretless acoustic.

The child in me wants 20, the minimalist in me wants one, the practical one in me knows I'll always have 3, the realist in me knows at least 4.

of the 5 basses i have i would only sell the fretless due to lack of use and not replace it, and the 5 string i would only sell TO replace it. I know my Jazz bass, P bass and fender 77 music master (that i scored for $150) will never leave me.
