I am currently the house bass player for a jam on tuesday nights at a place called The Squawbar in Ingleside Il. I just moved to Chicago to try to find other oportunities, so the commute is more than it's worth to me.
The jam is very laid back. You will get several breaks of 20 minutes or so per night. I think you can drink all the beer you want for free (I don't drink when I play and neither does the guitarist/singer, so I don't really know). Unfortunately pay isn't all that great. You might be able to get $40. But, you don't have to be able to read music or know theory. You basically just have to be able to passibly play some basic tunes. So, if you've never really played with a band and want to get started making a little bit of money playing or you want a few extra hours a week on stage, this could work for you.
