I'm currently deep in a bass search, and the two basses I've liked best so far are both Jacquet-Gand, late 19th century violin shaped basses. They're pretty similar to each other, and if I had only found one or the other I reckon each could be my bass for life... but sound-wise one of them has a more beautiful, complex tone in the higher register and really sings arco, while the other has a gloriously resonant low end, especially the E and A strings...
They've both been set up by highly respected luthiers, but different luthiers from each other - am I right in thinking that the resonant low end is more likely to be improved by soundpost adjustment and other set-up issues, while the rich thumb position tone more inherent to the bass?
The one that sounds better with the bow and in thumb position is the more expensive, probably a decade or two older and looks like even higher quality wood of the two
