Double Bass Opinion on possible rig - Wizzy 10 + Iamp micro

Actually I'm a doubler. Play mostly wedding gigs where we are using our jazz trio for the cocktail and dinner hours, then the full classic rock band for the dance portion of the evening. I'm using an NS WAV4 for the jazz trio and active 4 string basses (for the most part) for the classic rock part of the night. I don't mind hauling 2 smallish rigs and right now for the classic rock stuff I'm using a Schroeder 212bmf with an Mpulse 600 for that which works well adn sounds great.

However, I have yet to find a decent sound portable rig for the jazz trio stuff. My Walkabout Scout just ain't cutting it for the jazz stuff and the Schroeder is just too much. I actually need 2 rigs because of the early after noon sound check needed for full band and the classic rock stuff.

Considering the Wizzy 10 + EA mico amp for the trio. Almost seems too good to be true from what I'm reading here. I could possibly use the Mico interchangeably with both groups, or as I see, there is the EA Doubler, too.

You should find plenty of discussions on the Wizzy 10 and Micro amps. That said, I use a Wizzy 10 and Micro 300 for small restaurant gigs and it does just fine. This is usually with a BugBass with a drumless blues trio.

I also use the amp with a pair of Wizzy 12 cabs for bigger stuff and it does okay.

Well the only reason you would want the doubler over the micro would be if you wanted the mic input, notch, hi pass and phase. If you are using a Wav it's really debatable if you need any of those features. In the end it's not much more for the doubler or much bigger so if the upcharge is not an issue it really may be worth it.

The wizzy 10 is the most portable little cab but I don't think it is the best sounding of the bunch. Many disagree with my opinion but I felt when I had my wizzy ten that it was to strong in the mids. To the point where I turned the mids off with the amp EQ. I also found it wasn't very useful as an EB cabinet. From what many say the Wizzy 12M seems to be the best choice of cabinets in production.

I think of the wizzy 10 as the best compromise if you really need a cabinet that small. Phil Jones is making some really nice small combos that may also work for you.

I seriously consider Peter's comment here. If you play the Double Bass and just don't use it for convenience sakes on gigs then the extra $250.00 might be worth it down the road. The variable low pass filter and notch would also work with the NS Wave.

This seems to be a issue with many TB players. EA even offered a conversion kit with different material to dampen the cabinet. I don't remember what the consensus was about the modification. The Wizzy 12 M gets a lot of praise on TB.

Chris F certainly loves the Super Flight Case. I would think It would work well for EB up to a point and Phil does offer powered cabinets now if you need more kick. I've always like smaller speakers in pairs for DB. Just my preference though.

I'm playing blues rather than jazz and the guys I play with like how the Wizzy 10 enhances the pitch center, while still providing good bottom and volume. At least for my setting, with a EUB, the Wizzy 10 has been an excellent solution for small gigs where there's barely room for an amp in the playing area (usually no actual stage). Of course, YMMV.

Thanks guys for the responses. I just wanted to point out as stated in my OP, that I'm not looking for a "one rig solution". I'm very content for BG and the classic rock material with my Schroeder 1212BMF and Mesa head. It's light, portable and having started out on BG, really is currently giving me the right sound for that portion of the evening.

That's why I'm looking at the Wizzy 10 and Iamp micro for the jazz trio portion of the evening with the WAV4, which is usually in a different location than the full band, classic rock portion of the evening for the wedding gigs we play.

Understanding that, the wizzy 10 may or may not provide you with the tone you are looking for. The Wizzy 12 / M line and other manufacturers cabs may have a more pleasing tone, not just maximum volume output.

Again many agree that the wizzy 10 is probably the smallest cab that can amplify a DB (there are others). There is some debate over those that love the tone and others who feel there is a compromise tonally in a cab that small.

HEY WIZZY USERS - the website mentions a backpack for the Wizzy 10, but I can't find ANY info on such a thing on their website other than that mention. Anybody know where I can get more info? Or do I just call'em up?

Ed, I do see this now on Bob G's site:

And in there it says "The original Micro Backpack had backpack straps, and; this new one does not, but it does have a double handle and shoulder strap for easy carrying." Maybe the backpack is no more. But maybe they have "old" stock lying around.

I got a wizzy10 bag from Bob Xmas 2009 wanting a backpack but Mark said they don't make them anymore. It's still great for my use but a backpack would've been sweet.

FWIW... I typically double in the same set. I use a newer micro/wizzy10 for indoor/full PA support gigs. For outdoor stuff I sometimes bring my old 4x10 and run both cabs w/the micro. I love my Fishman Plat Pre so it's alway part of my rig. I'm sure it would be different if I had the EA Doubler but I'm not fixing what works.
