Opinions on Covers

I have a 60th Anniversary P that I want to add covers to, but I'm not sure which covers to use.

See the dilemma? It's a modern MIA P, but has the '51 look to it.

Which covers would you use, the modern style or the Tele bass style?

You will not be able to get the 51/Telecaster Bass-Style PU-Covers installed. You must go for the "new" covers instead which makes a decision pretty simple.

The 51-Covers are smaller and will not fit over a splitcoil pickup...

+1 that's exactly what I'd do on this bass if I would want to add covers on this type of bass.

On the other hand exactly that is the problem with everything:

I don't like these anniversary basses for they are whether flesh nor fish to me...to much hybrid for my taste.

I bet they are great players though but I can't get used to the looks somehow...same with the Dirnt :rolleyes:

As far as a player, it's amazing. Even better now that it's wearing flats!!

I've been going back and forth about the covers, but I hadn't thought about the fit over the pickup. That really narrows it down.

I'm probably going to add the bridge cover, if nothing else to cover the foam under the strings at the bridge. I may just have to forget about covering the pickup.

Here's a quick shot with just the bridge cover (no screws or holes drilled yet).

I have a 60th Anniv. Precision as well. I do not dare drill holes in mine and sacrifice its natural beauty! :rollno:

I love having the pickup cover on my AV62 Jazz, for aesthetics and functionality (anchor my thumb) but I find Precisions are a whole different beast. I'm a pick and fingers player, and to me covers on P's look incredible but hinder bass functionality.

Covers over the pickups restrict where you might find some of the most balanced and meatiest tones, and having a cover over the bridge restricts any palm muting technique I might want to incorporate.

Anyone else find this the case too?

As far as playing goes, I'm 98% fingers. I only ever use a pick if the song absolutely requires it.

The cover on the bridge can be loaded with foam for muting purposes, though I do sometimes mute with the side of my pinky while playing with the other three fingers.

Basically I lay my pinkie lightly near the bridge, kinda gives the sound of palm muting.

I agree that the pickup is best left uncovered. To combine a modern pickup cover with a tele-style bridge cover would look stupid, so best left alone.

I would definately put the bridge cover on.Looks classy, covers up the bridge, which Leo even thought should be covered,bridges are sort of ugly but functional IMHO. Very useful for foam .Like the look of it on this bass.

Keep voting, but here's a side question.

Is there a "correct" exact spot for the bridge cover, or is the main point to just cover the bridge?

This bass has the newer high mass bridge. Just fun all around!! Makes this whole venture pretty entertaining. In order for the cover to fit, it seems to be a bit further forward than I've seen them. Think of putting the '51 bridge cover on a newer P. Is that ok?(sorry, still learning the proper Fender etiquette. Not trying to offend the purists too much.)
