Double Bass Opinions On Finish

As someone that has done this before... Unless you feel the finish is impeding the sound I wouldn't refinish. Removing a hard finish from a double bass is very labor intensive and messy, and some times you don't want to know what is underneath.. Also any sanding/ scraping you do can have a impact on the sound and sctructure or your bass if you remove any actual wood. AND as this is a large object it will be much harder to achieve a nice looking Finnish unless you have a lot of experience.

All that said. 13-14ish years later I am still happy with the refine I did to my bass and am thankful to all the helpful threads here on the subject.

When I was making furniture I had to do a shellac finish on a series of pieces, being used to nitro lacquer I sprayed successive coats on in a short period of time, it was during hot/humid summer months too. The finish ended up looking like this bass.
