Opinions on Jackson basses

Can you remember Charvel SanDimas, Kramer Baretta, Ibanez Jem Peavey Frankenstrat Jackson Dinky and countless others
Jackson Concert bass, with the original P/J configuration, can be considered a "SuperPre" meaning a super charged slab and symmetric Precison style HiMass bridged body, all on steroids!
With EMG pickups is way more modern and somewhat powerful
but it misses both the more versatile configuration of the past for a up-to-date doublesoapbar one and "SuperPre" character of good ol' days.
That said: a good bass for the price

Too bad none of the shops any where near me stock any Jackson basses. I was interested in giving a 5 string Jackson a serious test drive. Oh well, their loss.

I think CMG's are the worst looking, most outrageously overpriced, most horrible playing units ever conceived in the history of guitar making.

In my hands, they have that Ric-like feel to them. They have that sharp-edged, square-ish type feel, with no smooth,comfortable contours to them. It would seem that they would have that "race car"-like quality to them (like their guitars). After all, they ain't exactly aimed at smooth jazz players.
Jackson's reputation is mainly based on heavy music, and fast, fleet-fingered guitar players.

actually my post was kinda a joke to get a conversation started. But truthfully, it is no different than any of my other dozen Jacksons over here. Turn the mid/treb up and it gets a fine clanky roundwound string tone, turn the mid/treb down and it sounds like everything else. I'm more partial to the 80's necks and not the 90's necks because there is a difference, but I'll play either for hours and never get tired of them.
The old cmg series was ok but a little pricey compared to the competition. They had two main weaknesses. First the preamps had a bad history of pots going scratchy due to cheap pots used in them. Bit the ones I had developed this and tuner cleaner did not help. 2nd problem was mediocre bridges. The new JS series is much better for pups, preamp, and bridge imo and much lower cost. I dunno if the elleifson models use the same emg liscenced preamp with poor pots or not. But I do like the jackson pups voicing better then the emg hz soapbars and same for the jackson preamp. More agressive and more growly. Full size pots to. Excellent fretwork and overall build etc.
I really like my CMG. Plays well, not too heavy. I put a BadassII bridge on it for the hell of it 'cause I had one laying around. Drop-D tuner also. This pic is of course without the BadassII.
Any Jackson 5 string owners here? I'm curious about neck widths and measurements at the nut, 12th fret and 22 fret. Looking for a 5'ver with a somewhat narrow string spacing and a neck that does not fan out too wide. I thought a Jackson may fit the bill but no one has any in stock around here.

I know exactly how passionate you are about any and ALL things Jackson (Besides Phil..... Get it?lol). Actually, I feel like a disrespectful turd towards you specifically due to my earlier post. Now, I never said that they sound/play like ____ . IMHO, they just lack in the ergonomics department. The tone,and the neck??? To die for!!!! I be lovin' me some flat radius f/boards , for sure! Just not enuff contours on the body. That's all.
So,all in all. No disrespect meant,guys/gals.

What I like is what I like and is always an opinion. Just like the Fenderboys, I found something I like and collected a bunch of them over the years.
I'd still take my model2 over a CMG anyday.

I have a passive PJ Jackson C20 with a 2+2 headstock. It's a surprisingly good bass except for the cheap pots. I think it's out of production but there are still some left on MF, etc.
Thanks for the link! From the fotos I thought I'd find what I'm, looking for with a Jackson. I just wanted to test drive it but with a 30 day return policy, it seems like a win win situation.

Question, the JS3V, is it body through strung?? How is the fit and finish? To be perfectly honest, I worry about the quality of a bass worth $379. Not that I expect a world of difference if I spend $100 more on a CBX 5. I realize that the next jump after that is the neck through Ellefson signature bass. At $3,000+ the entire bass should be carved out of ebony, never mind just the fret board. And I don't need Ellefsons signature on a piece of paper, his sweatbands, or his symbol all over the bass.

haha don't get me started on my take on Ellefson Sig basses at 3grand 
but ya what do you got to lose when you can return the JS or CBX if you don't like it....
the folks here who have them and my friends from the other board have not said a negative thing worthy of worry.

The Jackson Basses, are they strung through the body or the bridge? I saw an older Jackson Kelly Bird Bass that was strung through body.
Too bad about the new Jackson Kelly Birds. I hear they will not hit the market until 2014?? ***??

2014 is the projected timeframe, they may never be made. I think they look stupid, and Jackson should just bring back the Kelly Bass as it was in the 2000's. And yes some units were made string thru. ( like the Kelly and CMG )
