Looking for opinions regarding what would get a better lower end punch, 2x12 or a 4x10? We are playing in a smaller room now and my 2x12 sounds great but only when im standing halfway down the stairs haha. would a 4x10 give me that good sound but at a closer distance?

All speakers have the same characteristics as far as room reactions are concerned, and in this case it is the room causing the problem, not the cab.

I've always found 410 cabinets to have more of a compressed (slightly dampened) punchy tone than 112 or 212 cabinets.

That being said, you typically don't get the warm lowend response out of a 410 that you get with the 112 or 212 cabinets. Porting style and size can greatly change everything but as a general rule if you want a punchy sound, I'd go with the 410.
