Just want to say - here in Omaha the X32/M32 is the preferred choice of almost every mobile sound engineer and several in-place installations - at least at the A-list cover band level.

My current band setup for this weekend has no gates/comp on any inputs. I have the 31-band EQs ready to go on each monitor mix bus, but they are currently disabled and there is a good chance they will stay that way (unless I am getting any feedback issues).

two things;

first, you can totally set this board so that the comps, gates and EQ on the channels do not affect the monitors, and that's what you want to do. it's somewhere on the "routing" page i think (i'm more familiar with the XR18).

out front, a little 4:1 comp on the vocals, maybe some 2:1 on the bass and some super-fast gates on the kick and toms will go a long way towards a smooth, clean mix.

second, forget the 31 band EQ, that's almost obsolete technology these days! parametric EQ was always better, just harder to figure out in the analog realm.

on a touchscreen, true parametric has found its home and is both better and easier than graphic.

if you're using wedges then you definitely need the EQ engaged here; since the channel EQs are bypassed in the monitors, you're using the overall wedge EQ to make the primary thing (usually vocals) sound good and get loud without fedback; that mostly means sliding up the steep low cut (HPF) to like 100Hz or even a little higher, making a couple of wide, gentle dips to find and reduce any harsh or woofy zones, and hopefully only one or two narrow but deep notches to find and kill actual feedback.

i'm firmly in the "never boost, only cut" camp for output EQs (mains, monitors). channel EQ you do whatever makes that channel sound right, even if it's a weird amount of boost or cut.
