I don't see how you can get your pick in a decent position away from the bridge if your other fingers are resting behind the bridge on that thing.

Dubious invention. It's likely "Opti-" for "optimal", but if you stuck your pinky in there and "threw the bass around", it seems to me you'd soon have a finger out of joint, or broken. If he really needs that it should be a sling of silicone rubber or something.

While I don't care for their music, I wouldn't say a guy who wrote all their songs and made them a lot of money is useless. IMHO

As for useless: so is a fancy figured wood veneer, but they're popular enough on basses.
