So over last winter, I did a complete gut and refinish on a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass. I refinished it in matte surf green with a matching headstock (my avatar). I installed Gotoh vintage reverse tuners with long stems (long stem club for life), installed a Hipshot Kick Ass bridge, DiMarzio Model P/J with new pots and vintage wiring. I did this mostly as a first foray into refinishing and customizing so I kind of went all out. I set it up how I liked and tried some D'Addario XLs on it (105-45 as is my sweet spot). I really enjoyed the E string, but the highs on everything else were overwhelming. I do come from using almost exclusively Fender 7250M, with a small detour into Ernie Ball Slinkies that lasted about 2 years. Anyways, I tried adjusting pickup height and messing with my EQ, but could never get the sound I wanted. So after searching the forums here, decided to try so Nickel Lo-Riders and they got it! They get some nice growl, but those highs are mellow (at least for my taste) and hit that sweet spot for me. I also bought some XL balanced tension to try out, but I think D'Addario just isn't for me so I'll likely return those. A question for all you string enthusiasts out there. I am interested in trying a balanced tension set just to see what it feels like. Are there a set that has similar vibes to these Nickel Lo-Riders? Thanks in advance!
