Options for Left-Handed Players

It's no secret that options for left-handed players are considerably more limited. There are options for left-handed instruments, but the choices are relatively few. Some brands like Warwick offer most of their models in both lateralities, but they are in the minority. Dingwall, for example, have none at all (as far as I can see). There are many basses - some expensive, some cheap - which I would seriously consider buying if only they came in left-handed. What I am wondering is if anyone has ever tried approaching a mainstream manufacturer - someone like Gibson or PRS - and requested that they make a left-handed model especially in the custom shop. And, if so, whether this proved very much more expensive than buying the same right-handed model off the shelf. I've been thinking about doing this but I would rather first have an idea of whether it is even worth doing. If it's a silly or naive idea or if it would be absurdly expensive then I wouldn't bother trying.

I only support manufacturers that already build left-handed models. Anyone that requires you to "custom order" one can kiss my rotund backside.
