Orange Amps

No serial number !

Is it the very first amp ever produced in the entire world ??? lol.

Correct, it was a protoype that got lost and turned up in an elctrical components store where they buy junk by the pallete.
The output transformer wires had never been terminated
This is how I found it

This is after Jeff at Matamp had used his magic touch, at the nd of all this it stood me at just over £300/$450. Lucky or what?

That means nothing without reference to what a £ or a $ buys in their respective countries.

At the end of the second World War, the Pound, the French and Swiss Franc and the Italian Lira were all at parity, and look at the exchange rates now (not even considering devaluations during the period). What makes a difference to us when considering the price of importing and exporting goods is are the recent fluctuations in exchange rates, and how they relate to a companies pricing decisions in a given market.

The French Franc and Italian Lira no longer exist.

And I'm pretty sure that an Orange AD200B is cheaper in Britain, where it's made, than it is over here.

Of course you're right, I was thinking of the differences to their values before the change to the € and how radically they had diverged by modern times.

You're right about the latter, too, but I don't know what point you're making.

I just waited 3 months for my Thunderverb 200 to come.

It's clean channel runs on the same tubes as the AD200B, it gets VERY loud, and I love the tone.

Could have had the AD200 for about a thousand dollars less. I like the versatility though, I can switch cabs and run the Thunderverb with my guitars.

The price difference between a new "Orange" or Electric amp isn't that much from the original vintage models. Thats kind of what kills me on this.
for example:
78 Orange OR80 $2000 BIN
Not to mention these tend to sit in pawnshops and such because not a lot of guys want a bright orange amp head! I know one fella that spray painted an Orange head black actually (okay that was years ago).

Matamp "white" GTO 140 $1750 BIN Okay the Matamp isnt so vintage. But you get my point.
If I wanted a real Orange I would buy used.
To me the only reason I can see for getting one of the Reeves or Electrics is if they offer customization, or if you want to mod it afterwards. The tag board/point to point amps are naturally way easier to mod than any PCB amp.
As far as the exchange rate with the UK. It has been roughly 1.5 pounds to a buck for as long as I remember. (which isnt' that long these days!). Besides, arent all the "Terror" amps made in Korea or China? In that case the strong pound would buy them a lot of manufacturing before its ships to the US, where the weak dollar vis a vis the yuan (or whatever Korea's currency is) would give them a decent margin.
Electric amps are certainly sexy as heck. But I cant get over the price being the same for the full head with master volume, the non master version and the slave head!?!? Their 4x15 cabs are certainly affordable in comparison!

I am not entirely sure Orange or Matamp ever made a 200W head though. Someone with more knowledge on those cryptic amps?

I found an early 200 watt Orange/Matamp slave that I took to the current Matamp factory where I let 'Jeff Lewis' (curent owner of Matamp) have it for what I paid, I think it was about £120/$180.
Matamp have recently launched a 200 watt Bass amp which is way better than the Orange AD200.

That Orange amps are expensive in the USA for several reasons, including exchange rate. AFAIK, they are not as expensive in comparison to other amps in the UK, where Orange is based, than they are here.

Having owned two Orange 120 watt amps previously I signed out a brand new AD200B (they let me cause I'm old) I took it back within the hour, a one trick pony with very limited tone variations (especialy mid range) compared to my previous Orange amps. If I do move back into Valves/Tubes it'll be a real Orange made at Matamp

mmm, shame neither of those in the pictures were made by matamp. I'd love to get my hands on one of the ormat 200watters though

So tired of Americans whining over Orange's prices - everything we buy here in Europe is about 30% more expensive as in the US and here is a barely a used market.

I've been looking at a guitar amp lately - a Princeton reissue goes for 950 euro over here, which is 1200 dollar and therefore a friggin' lot more than the 900 or something you guys have to pay.

And if we want to step out of the mass-produced ordinary it's even more - I bought a Turbo Tuner for 160 euro customs included - which is 200 dollars.

hey tony...what is wrong with you bloody brits? How dare you FORCE me to pay $12 for a 6 pack of Fullers? :)..wah wah wah

Honestly, if people do not like the price of an item, whether it be beer or an amp, don't pay it...I remember reading some guys in Europe were pissed about the price of mesa gear too...it is what it is and if you want it you pay ...more if it is imported
