Orange Bass terror Tubes

One thing i didnt do is try different tubes at different spot, dont know how it responds for that but i know that some people did that in the Mesa Walkabout with succes so it might be worth trying...
Cant be arsed to be honest so if you do let me know how it works out...

That is definitely true too. In my ampeg I have Tung sols in the first couple valve positions since they're driven the hardest by the amp, and then JJ's in the rest. That works pretty well for me. Also, experimenting with different 12ax7 type tubes is a good idea, like using a 12au7 can smooth it out and lower gain if that's what you're going after too.

I have a new update on the rig!

After two uses the Orange Bass Terror died on me!

Last week it cut out twice during the gig, i played around with the kettle lead in the back and it came back on so i assumed it was just a bad connection and carried on!

Yesterday, it started doing the same thing and then just died! No lights, no sound, no nothing! Checked the fuse, tried with another kettle lead, nothing, its just gone....

Im really annoyed and although it is still under warranty i really dont feel confident in orange anymore!
Can you really rust an amp after it failed twice in three uses?
Did i just get a lemon or is it just a crap amp with bad QC?

Will call orange on monday and see how they handle this situation and keep ou posted.

I can totally understand your disappointment, but I would at least give orange a chance.
when the second bass terror also quits on you.... thats a different story!!

I had never had any problems and i am running it 2-3 times a week for 4-5hours. And i am playing it for a year now!

ive been using my orange terror for about 6 months now with no issues. however, i have issues with other orange products in the past and im kinda nervously awaiting for this to happen to me. :( i bought some tung sols to put in mine but now im being a little hesitant. ****.

Reopening this thread. I just dropped two Tung Sols in my Orange Terror Bass 500 - it does make a difference. Sounds less muddy to me and sparkles a bit more. Let's see how they burn in.

BTW, and I hope I don't regret posting this, but I've had my Terror Bass since May 2010, and it's been a champ. No issues.

most tube amps have V1 located closest to the input jack.

I like JJ12ax7s in my tube head. Eurotubes sells a "high gain" 12ax7, basically just the 12ax7s that test out highest. It made a noticeable difference in volume when I put one in my PI without adding any more distortion than normal or changing the tone. I recommend one if you lost a little volume when you switched to JJs.

In expectation of a Terror Bass head that arrives next week, I've begun researching replacements for the stock tubes. I know I'm going to want more clean headroom, can anyone recommend tubes which could accomplish this? I like some grit/growl in my tone, but probably wouldn't need full-on fuzz very often.

I added an electroharmix Knock Out preamp to my Terror bass setup and it adds the punch and drive I wanted. I use it very moderately. You wouldn't even know it was there, until you switch it out, and then the amp sound a little flat. It adds some pluck to the low end and some shine to the highs.

OK, so I tried multiple tubes out today. Here is what I tried and my opinion of them.
Chinese 12ax7B: nice presence, limited gain in the respect that the gain control kicked in heavy at about 2 and made no difference from 2 on. EQ with these tubes had little to no bass response and a really shrill, glassy high end.

Sovtek 12ax7LPS: good gain response in V1 position, horrible EQ in V2 position. Sounded really micro-phonic and overall a bit too dark.

Groove Tube ST12ax7- R: horrible gain response. really compressed the output of the amp and the EQ

Groove Tube GTEEC83- S: Gain control had little to no response until around 4 or 5. Little to no EQ effect on Treble and Bass control. Added more EQ range to the Mid control.

What I found works best for my sound was a JJ Electronics ECC803S in V1 and an Electro- Harmonix 12ax7EH Gold in V2. The JJ seemed to even the gain control out a bit, giving a much more usable sweep on the control. The EH seems to give the EQ an overall more balanced sound. No shrill highs or compressed sounding muddy lows.
Seems that I found a tube combo that gives me an EQ range I can use!

I've been playing around with the preamp tubes in TB500 as well.

I've currently got a Mullard reissue 12AX7 in the left slot and a Groove Tubes 12AX7-R in the right position.

More definition all around and more usable gain- less muddy.

I'm happy for now- these are staying in for now.

Which tube would you suggest for the TB500, and in which position? (EH, EH Gold Pin, JJ)

Try them all in V1, and pick whichever you like the best. Chances are, the differences will be subtle, and probably most audible as you go from clean to overdrive.
