Orange (cheap) Amps & Hofner Icon

Your best bet is to plug your Hofner into as many amps as you can find, and decide for yourself which sounds best. Any bass amp will work, there's no secret pairings that work better than others, and it's all very subjective. Your ears alone can make that choice.
Find a cheap valve amp and play it through a cheap 15 inch. Are you gigging or is this for the studio?

You have to spend some more money if you want to listen for a vintage sound.
I can tell you when i plug my Ignition (= HI series/2009 made in Indonesia Icon for the european market) in these amps:
- Fender Bassman 250/115 250W (mine, the one that i use on gig)
- Peavey TNT115 150W (rehearsal studio),
the sound is awesome and surely vintage.
For home practice i often use a Vox Amplug Bass, an headphone amp wich imitates the sound of AC100 ===> 100% vintage.
Fender Bassman was the McCartney amp at the Roof Concert, listen for "Don't let me down" on the Tube: this is a very good vintage Hofner sound.

Orange 35 b is a good practice amp for the money, but no more then that. If you are looking to play bigger venues, i'd look around for something else.

But I still wanted the best sound I could get. I know the top Orange amps have a good reputation, but I'm not sure about these cheap ones.
I know VOX had that T25 amp (wich was a valve amp, right?) for a very reasonable price, but I can't find any.
I'm looking for a practice amp, from 20 to 50 watts, up to 300 dollars (maybe a bit higher if it was a valve amp).
What do you think?

McCartney sometimes uses an Ashdown:
I think you can get a smaller combo for a reasonable amount.

I bought a new 35B from Humbucker, that meant no tax and free shipping.
All in all, it's a solid deal for the price. Wouldn't want to try it outside the apt, but it does a nice job for personal practice.
The only thing I'd really like is an effects loop or pre-amp in, something I could bypass the Orange preamp with and run a VT or BDI into alone.
I'm looking to replace the 35B with a Micro SVT rig soon.
All in all, it's a solid deal for the price. Wouldn't want to try it outside the apt, but it does a nice job for personal practice.

I've not tried orange amps, but I can tell you if you want a "warm" sound you should go for the Ashdown. I know they beat Trace Eliot on tone for me...if you want a little grit maybe you should get yourself a valve preamp (I know DHA make them...and the guy's on here himself under "DHA")
The VOX combos (T25 and T60) are solid state, and good little amps. And hard to find.
I recommend an Ampeg BA112, it gets a nice tone for a starter, I play a Hofner Icon through mine and it sounds great.

In general, the larger the box and speaker the bigger the sound. I don't know what 300 buys where you are, but a 12 or 15 inch speaker with as much power as you can afford, along with headphone out and aux in (to practice with computer, drum machine, iPod or CD) would be worth looking for.
