orange obc410 w/ svt7pro?

Hey,
I am seriously considering purchasing an ampeg svt7pro to go along with my sansamp rbi and orange OBC410 and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this sort of set up, I am in a Hardcore metal band and need to cut through the mix quite alot, the orange is a great cab and i am just curious on other bassist's thoughts on the set up (if 600 watts will cut it at 8 ohms).

Thanks man! It's not so much the quality of sound as I am very much a fan of the RBI and really like the sound of the svt7pro, it's more the volume I am skeptical about, it will be running 600watts at 8ohms, I know the obc410 is a very powerful cab but yeah, I guess I won't know until I try it out (will be running the sansamp through the input of the svt, not the effects loop or power amp

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the only reason I am skeptical is because I also have a bassman 300 (300 watts at 2, 4 or 8 ohms) which I use which I never go above 2 on the master volume, haven't had much experience with the hybrid amps

There is a big difference, of course, between an all-tube head and a hybrid, class-D/SMPS head. But among that latter group, the SVT-7Pro hits harder than the majority of the competition, and offers a very nice feature set.

I have spent some time with the GBE 1200, and I reviewed it in BGM issue #1. It is a fine product, with a lot of tone controls. Genz-Benz make very good amps, for sure, but I do find that I have to spend a good bit of time tweaking them to get "my sound" out of them. IME/IMHO, the 7Pro is more plug and play friendly, and I think that you will get roughly similar levels of performance out of the two.

I've had a 300 pro & have a 7 pro now. I'd still probly say the 300 goes louder, but the 7 pro's no slouch. It's THE lightweight amp to get in the same ballpark imo. Thru a 410/610 etc, it's LOUD! The master control is quite even 'taper' ?? But it gets louder virtually all the way to 5 o'clock on its dial. So where 1 o'clock is full on some amps, the 7 you can keep pushing the dial to get to full.

The better comparison to the 7Pro is the Shuttle Max 9.2. GREAT head. The Ampeg sounds like an Ampeg and the Genz sounds like a Genz, so a bit apples to oranges. The 9.2 is killer though. Great quality, nice tube warmth and a bit of grind if you want it, amazing EQ, and very lightweight. Also, another key is service and reliability, and IMO the current Ampeg company isn't even in the same universe in either of these areas.

If you dig that Ampeg tone, and want loud in a light box, the 7Pro seems pretty darn cool. If you dig the Genz tone (tight and bright in general), the Shuttle Max 9.2 is pretty amazing regarding volume, tonal variation, and wump per pound.

Try a Streamliner or Shuttle 9.0/Max 9.2 with the OBC410. I have the Orange cabs and a Streamliner which i've not had much time to try together, but my instinct says the punchy OBC tone would match excellently with the Streamliner, plus you would have a smaller, lighter amp, with about the same power and Genz customer service.

I will definitely have a look at the genz Benz in the new year when I go to buy the head, although I am pretty sure I will go for the ampeg, as I am running the sansamp RBI as well. Also wouldn't 2 sets of eq and the rbi be major overkill if I went for the genz Benz?

Second time today I've read you casting aspersions on current Ampeg CS and reliability, and it's just plain not true. GB definitely has the rep for stellar CS and I would never take that away from them, but Ampeg's CS is vastly improved since getting rid of Jaime Engen 3 years ago. I've seen them bend over backwards to satisfy customers. We all know you don't like Ampeg, but no need to make up stuff to prevent people from buying their stuff.

I don't think anyone is casting aspersions. Ampeg have obviously sold thousands of the new PF amps and the Pro-7 is no doubt selling well. It's good to see they are changing the way they work, but there seems to be a fair few 'my Pro 7/PF amp has a problem' which isn't doing their reliability record much good. No doubt its still only a small percentage (as is Talkbass), but as you mentioned, the Genz CS rep is the best in the business. Even in the UK GB help out, whereas with Ampeg the UK CS is a different story altogther.

Well I can only speak to USA CS but the people with problem amps are getting replacements, so that's what I consider great CS. If you're having a problem with Ampeg's UK support, you might want to let the folks in Seattle know.

I have friend who have ampeg and have had no issues with there customer service, all going well, i hope that the svt7pro holds up and I never have to worry about CS :) one last thing I am interested In is how the 7pro goes with both passive and active basses?
