Orange Terror Bass 500 Exploded!

I'm repairing it on my own and switching both out. Called them yesterday and left a message, no call back yet. Its out of the 12 month warranty by 4 months, so I'm going to repair it now for $3 and an hour of time, and if it goes again I'll deal with O. Its due to the chinese caps (IMO), but at the same time $hit happens no matter who makes what. Have replacement panasonic ones in hand now, same rating but allow for 20% variance and are listed at 10,000 hours of life.

I am guessing you're going to replace all of them, even the ones that didn't blow? Cool. Easy Solder job really. Good idea to use different caps.

I'm going to do it one section at a time. Just have to be careful of size (as you can see!). Folks on my main thread have all reccomended a higher voltage (25 vs 16), but I ordered them before I heard the reasoning. I love this amp and not trying to do too much outside of current levels. There's most likely a 1000 great ones per one like mine who got the bad batch from the fine folks at Honsing :scowl:

Also, based on the wealth of aid I've found on here on this issue and all others I'll be a supporting member come paycheck on friday.
 
Well...here's a new addition to the continuing saga of Orange Terror Bass 500 capacitors exploding.

The other night as I was getting ready to rehearse I turned my amp on, put it into standby to warm up, then it went 'POP' like a starters pistol and smoke started to pour out of it. The power light was still on but I immediately shut it off.

Upon inspection (removing the hood and having a look inside) it could clearly be seen that a capacitor had in fact exploded inside the unit. (see the dark blue capacitor and fuzzy looking exploded thing in the attached photo).

My question is....why is Orange using sub-par capacitors that are now known to be defective and exploding inside these Bass Terror units?

I've had my unit for over a year now and things were running smoothly until now... I guess it's just a matter of time for all Bass Terror owners...be aware.

PS: The larger light blue capacitor in the photo is the replacement capacitor for the amp. The smaller dark blue one is the defective cap cover and of course the fuzzy thing is the exploded capacitor.

You'll notice they've shifted the voltage from 16v to 25v with the replacement. Seems they went went for a smaller cap, and therefore cheaper, and thought it could handle the load. Swing and a miss boys. Not fair either if that was a boardroom decision to save cash.

awww man replacements I purchased were 16v! Maybe order 25's and wait for next year?? :rolleyes:
 
I suspect these are filters on the +/- 15vdc supply. 16V is cutting it close and relying on over-voltage tolerance from the cap supplier (RMS voltage ratings).

If they were using 16V caps on 15V supplies - they were complete idiots.

Even on a low ripple supply, use caps rated at 2x the supply voltage if possible/practical. Lifespan starts derating pretty significantly once you hit 50% of the rated voltage.
