Analog sample-rate reducer! 
Yeah, whatever.
I hope you like. A friend asked me to build one for him (for vox) and I didn't get around to it yet. I'm curious to know how you like it on bass. I'm most curious where you decide to put it in your signal chain.

we'll see where it goes... i am thinking after my filter and noisebox, but before my phasor and delay... although after the phasor might be interesting....

Cool! I've only heard a guitar played through an earlier version of the Bug Crusher, and really liked the sounds it produced. An inspirational tool indeed. So, please post some sound clips, with bass guitar, once you've got the pedal.
Me, I'm hoping to be able to get my hands on one of the forthcoming AudioWeevils. Tom builds such cool things (I want one of each...), and is a friendly bloke too.

This might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between a bit crusher and a ring mod? They both sound kinda similar to me, and I like them both. Is it just that a bit crusher will get you more....low-fi video gamey sounds?

i'll make some frequency analyzer vs. bug crusher clips when i get it... should clear things up.

That would be most appreciated, John. I guess I should add that while I can't tell much a sonic difference between the two types of effects, I like 'em both in certain contexts.
I can't really say that there's any effects that I don't appreciate on some level, as long as they're well-used. Which, in my opinion, can mean anything from extremely subtle to bug-nuts crazy.

I really want one of these and a Devi Ever Legend of Fuzz, I need the video game sounds for breakdowns and such in my band.
Very cool! I listened to the guitar clips on the link provided above. Much of the harmonic content is retained which IMO, makes it more "musical" compared to traditional ring mod.

As far as I know, you can't really order one. Tom builds his stuff in batches, and puts them in his webshop - where they are sold on a "first come, first served"-basis - when they are finished.
So, the best thing you can do if you want one is to subscribe to the Bugbrand mailing list to get updates, and then hope that you'll make it to the shop in time, before the batches are sold out.
That makes sense now that I've tooled around Tom's site for a few minutes. As far as I can tell, looks like John picked up a Micro.

i will also probably compare to some different software sample rate reducers, and also maybe the kaoss pad sample rate reducer settings... see how digital this thing can actually sound!

I just typed up a long explanation of the tech involved in ring modulation vs. sample rate reduction, but anyone who would be interested probably already knows it. The short explanation is that these are 2 completely different processes, which sometimes arrive at similar results. A good ring mod shouldn't sound like sample rate reduction.
But it is possible to do analog sample rate reduction; it uses an analog sample and hold circuit with a variable-speed oscillator into the gate input. Decreasing the osc. speed introduces the aliasing effects.

John, have you ever posted a picture of your pedalboard? I didn't recall ever seeing it but I only had the strength to search the last two threads to check.
I'm pretty sure you've mentioned what's on it (Mammoth, OC-3, Moog LPF among others right?) but I was just curious.

once i get this pedal i'll try to post a picture or two... it is always changing, so i never really 'document' it. i'm lazy about photos and such.
i'll do it soon. it's in flux right now... i have given up on my line6 delay, as 2 switches died, and after taking it apart, replacing all 4 switches with ones from a friend's (that blew up), one of the switches STILL didn't work... i like that thing, but it is too big and not worth the hassle of buying a new one... so i am also shopping for a good simple tap tempo delay. i'm thinking the TC nova delay.
