Organizing song ideas?

Justin, after having some freetime this week and having a few song ideas I've jotted down over the past month I've been trying to get all my bits and pieces together and I've remembered how hard of a time I have organizing song ideas I have whether it be lyrics or music.

I've probably got three or four notebooks with random lyrics written throughout them as well as just a stack of loose paper with lyrics and music written on them. I've tried to start making rough recordings on my PC of music ideas that I think of and that helps but I still have trouble keeping all my lyrical ideas together.

So to my question, how do you organize ideas and stuff you come up with whether you are sitting down actually writing something or just riding down the road and have an idea pop into your head?

I'm not particularly good about it. I write lyrics to suit a certain track, I don't tend to write a lot of lyrics independently, but I do keep a file in my laptop of lyric fragments that I constantly add to or draw from.

If I have a few lines, I will usually just focus on them and come up with music to suit. But more usually, I'll have a track and/or some beats and write lyrics to it out of the blue.
