Other bands that sound like Pink Floyd?

Porcupine Tree was the first band I thought of also, but I'm not entirely sure why. Could be the way the songs are constructed.

There aren't a whole lot of bands that sound like Floyd. They have a huge catalog with very different eras that make them sound different from each other.

Definitely check out Alan Parsons, his close ties to Pink Floyd are evident in his music. I robot greatly inspires me to play and mess around with songwriting. I love the style.

Yep. Alan Parsons actually engineered for Pink Floyd. Well worth a listen.

One band I'd recommend is Hammock from. GERMANY. Mostly instrumental but Def a modern Floyd sound and style going on. At least that's my opinion. If u can find it check out Planet P projects Pink World. Def Floyd vibe Ala the Wall. Great c if u can find it if not me pm and I can help you with that one. And I will.zay Fake Plastic Trees Def is a Floyd is song. In fact gonna record a new version of it but with a huge guitar solo at the end like Comfortably Numb.

Porcupine tree in their own right are fabulous but their album 'Voyage 34' is as close to Floyd as you will get IMO

What am I reading here...

The only band so far that makes any sense being mentioned in this thread is Radiohead.

There have been a lot of psychedelic bands, there have been a lot of prog rock bands, but the thing that makes Pink Floyd amazing is the sense of scope, the vision, how they can craft an emotional roller coaster of different moods, tempos, even entire genres, and still make it seem like a unified experience, if not a singular statement.

There have been too many psychedlic bands, making poppy, fuzzy, singsongy nonsense sprinkled with feedback explosions. Too many to count or care.

There have been fewer (but still more than necessary) dedicated prog rock bands, trying desperately to form catchy melodies around exhaustingly complex chord structures or time signatures, or bombastic overblown anthems that fall short of grandeur by virtue of their pointlessness.

There have been almost no true successors to the throne from whence Pink Floyd dictated the language of the gods into the human-audible sound frequency range.

Radiohead is one worthy contender for the title. Tool is another. If there are any others I can't think of them right now...

Not sure if they've been named yet, but IMO, The Mars Volta are sort of the Pink Floyd of my generation. They have done some very impressive soundscapes and prog work.

Progrock and progmetal share a similar key measures and their changes, there it ends. And if it does not, i would put Dream theater instead of Tool but I find both of them too far from Pink Floyd.

I am about to enter a studio project and the goal is to write and record original songs with a heavy Pink Floyd influence and Floyd type instrumentation. Can you name some other bands/songs that have the Floyd sound.
I am always looking for additional inspiration before putting my writing hat on. Any help would be well appreciated.

Just an additional note. These song will be for recording only and there no plans to play these song live at this time. It would require too many backing tracks.

How would anyone go into a studio situation with no songs and expect to write them and record them and in a style of another band? Wouldn't it be better to write songs in your own voices? I can't imagine having a preconceived notion like that. It seems contrived and antithetical to the creative process. Good luck to you but I don't know of any bands that did anything like this and had it come out very well but ymmv.

The tracks that are probably the most Floyd influenced are Play It Slow, She Refused, Storm and Certain Company.

I thought of Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, and some Dredg songs. Maybe even some Yes songs. Wouldn't have thought of Alan Parsons, but Stereotomy was one of my favorites years ago and I can see it. I'm not connecting Tool personally.

I think it's really what you think of when you think of Pink Floyd. If it's concept albums that's one thing...delays, effects, left turn tangents in the middle of songs could bring other comparisons.

Listen to Grizzly Bear's catalog. A lot of their early stuff has that gauzy Pink Floyd vibe, and their more recent stuff has the more polished but still trippy sound of PF's later work.
