I've been doing this for a few months now and nobody has said anything about trying out my bass. I love playing clubs and pubs but sometimes alcohol makes good people go bad. so this is my solution. I got the lock for about 6 bucks. See the photo

Wow! I've been doing this a looooong time and I've never played any place that disrespected the band so much that people would just walk up on stage during a break and start playing your gear. That's just incomprehensible to me. Does this really happen a lot in your circles? Where? Cambodia?

How often do you walk in a store, pawn shop, etc and get to play theirs? I only ask because i’m lefty but learned righty because i was told it would be much easier to buy basses, that lefties usually had to order new to get something.

Yes, it's true that 10% of the population is left handed but only about 1% of guitars produced are lefty's so they're harder to find. I've been playing bass for over 30 years and they are much easier to find now than ever before.
I have 5 basses and 3 of them I found in local music stores or on CL. The other 2 are used basses that I got on Reverb (they have lots of new and used lefty basses).
I don't let the fact that I play left handed cause me to be disappointed when all the guitars / basses I see in a music store are righty's and I'm sure not going to change just because someone gave me a weak reason like that.
Play whichever way feels best to you, don't compromise!

I've dealt with plenty of a-holes that SAID they either wanted to or were going to play my bass(s)

But I've never had anyone actually randomly pick one up.

i've seen it happen, but i used to always put my main bass in a backpack gigbag and carry it with me or leave it with a band member. if it ain't there, no one can pick it up and play it.

I had it happen once back in the 70s, the bartender/bouncer literally picked the guy up and physically threw him out the door!

If anyone just walked up and grabbed my bass on stage and started playing it I would prob lose my s@$t. Not cool. And grounds to be removed from said premises.

Or I’d say yeah go ahead. Give me your car keys real quick. I’ll do doughnuts with it in the parking lot while you noodle on my bass. One scratch and your car hits the curb.

Never had this happen. The closest I've come is random people looking over my gear while I'm on a break, but they never actually walk on to the stage area to get close enough to touch.

No. Just no. If anyone so much as touches my bass without express permission and me standing there watching their every move there will be physical violence.

P.S. If the perpetrator happens to be a small child, the parent or guardian will be the recipient of the violence. I’m not a monster.

Wow...If this kind of situation is enough of a "thing" that it prompted you to come up with this solution, I think you need to re-evaluate the venues you play. Never, ever has anyone randomly asked to go on stage just to noodle with our equipment, let alone just going up there without asking. I don't play anywhere that's super swanky, but they'd still get thrown out for trying to pull this off.

I've never run into that situation. People may ask what bass is that? But nobody has ever tried to play any of our gear.
