I'm starting to think it was time to move on anyway. I was using a QSC power amp and an Eden WTDI for a preamp. I'll have to use the QSC for the PA more often now, so I think it's time to also ditch the Eden and get a "proper" bass amp. Well, a combo.
I have my sights set on the SWR Super Redhead, probably the later 350 watt version. I've heard the pre-Fender SWRs are better, but I'm not sure I understand why. I really like the tone of the redhead, and feel pretty confident that with a 2x10 extension it will cover my needs, volume-wise. I play in a 4 piece funk/rock/blues band, that occasionally gets loud, but we're all pretty volume-conscious.
What I'm a bit hung up on is that I haven't heard a 5 string through a redhead. When I had the 2x12, my sub-E notes were full and clear. I am a fan of 12" speakers in general, though occasionally I have been impressed by some 10s. I know about the SWR Silverado, but I've never heard one and haven't found a lot of good press for them, especially compared to the redhead.
Would a 2x12 or even a 1x12 pair well with the redhead? Better than a 2x10?
