Overpriced?

I agree that the parts alone could be sold for more than the bass.
So maybe if you found somebody that was crazy for that particular part that is in really good shapre, you might get:

$300-500 for the neck
$100 for the tuners (assuming they are decent and he has them all)
$100 for the body
$25-75 for the bridge
$35-75 for the neck plate
$100 for the control plate (assuming the pots are correct)

In reality, I bet the neck needs refretting and probably has a ski jump, he doesn't have all the tuners and they are pitted, body is more beat than the photos show, the pots are changed, bridge and neck plate are beat, etc.

Dan to answer your question, I think $800 is very reasonable and would feel just fine walking away from what looks to be a train wreck

Mid '70s? Isn't that CBS era Fender? From what I understand, that would make even the $800 a bit generous, especially with a huge route, next to no stock parts, EMG's, and that nasty missing PG tanline. Dude, you can do better.

i think that your offer of $800 was more than fair (but IMO, probably worth it if it is a lightweight one). that thing is beat. and the brass nut is no picnic either. it may be worth $1995 in about 50 more years.

I'm no expert when it comes to vintage instruments, but even I know that changing anything about a vintage bass will reduce the value. The way this thing was all hacked up would reduce the value severely. What he's asking for I would think to be more in line with a totally stock in near mint condition 70's bass.
Some people just seem to get an overinflated idea of what stuff is worth, I guess hoping some sucker with little knowledge about what vintage basses are really worth would bite.

I'm glad to know my instincts were correct. $800 was probably too generous on my part. I was feeling charitable that day, I guess.

It would probably would have collected dust in my garage anyway. I'd never find the time to restore it.

I had an all original 1978/80 Fender Jazz that was in really nice shape for it's age. I was luck to get $2000 for it. This guy's dreaming. He'd probably make more money if he parted it out (blasphemy!).
