Overrated bass players

I don't for a minute think that McCartney would tell you that he is a bass guitar virtuoso. He is a mega talented composer and player of many instruments. The Beatles music is the most played and recorded by other musicians and symphony orchestras play more Beatles music than any other composers from the 60s to the present. You don't really hear them playing the Stones or the Who. McCartney was and is a genius who just happened to play bass for his band.

ok i chimed in becuz i saw 2 posts that irked me

one guy says ryno from mudvayne sux, and then another guy said cliff burton is way way overrated.

i highly disagree.

i watched ryno and hung out with him he is super dead on and killer personality as well as musical and chops.

and cmon, cliff burton was most special for the world of metal bassists using FINGERS.

did you know he wrote alot of parts for early metallica on his basses? yes some of the solos too that kirk and james did .

i give much respect to those 2 guys...

also above 2 posts someone bashed alex from cannibal. dude cmon. alex is a super guy and can play.

jeez....

im so mad at some posts i will say it again,

go listen to kill em all and ride the lightning, and master of puppets with headphones.

cliff OWNED and was my first bass idol.

RIP cliff.

remmeber also, his young age at which he was taken from us ... . 24 ?

a true pity , as he was a total innovator.

and also steve harris from maiden another great metal bassist!

Looking back, Cliff was everything to Metallica. There would be no Metallica without Cliff... they would put out things like Load and Re-Load if it weren't for this hippy telling them to be a little melodic, the world would be missing this music.

And come on, mixing the bass right out of And Justice For All... thats crappy right there.

Overrated, no.

Edit: Have you guys heard Lokire's mixing of AJFA to include bass tracks? Its actually really awesome.

Just because that is your opinion doesn't mean it should be the same as everyone elses. And what difference does it make that he's dead? Lots of people die, yes, it sucks. Death should not make a difference to someone's music to get them fans.

Fieldy - KoRN
Vic Wooten - Yeah hes got pretty good slap technique, but is it listenable? Hell, NO!!!! I think the stuff he plays is ridiculous and arrogant.
Les Claypool - I hate to admit it, but yeah, hes sloppy.
Jason Newsted - I dont really need to back this up with a reason. Compared to Burton hes an amateur.

i think this thread is going to get shut down soon because of the fact people are taking these opinions to heart like they actually know some of these bassist like in their heads theyre close friends and for the fact that of all places online you DONT call people idiots here on talkbass... especially when you've new here.
