I hate to invite the wrath of God on my head, but I honestly don't like any of the "OMG chops" bass players like Wooten, Patitucci, et cetera. I used to really love Jaco Pastorius but after about 5 straight years of pretty much worshipping the guy, I got really sick of him and I can't even listen to anything of his anymore. Nothing makes me not want to listen to a bass player more than another bass player telling me "dude, you gotta hear this guy, he's got the fastest hands I've ever seen!" UGH.
Personally the thing I love in a bassist is great tone, and all these bass players with their practically identical 6 string active Bartolini soapbar neck-thru custom-made basses with the huge treble boost and optional breadmaker attachment all sound like the exact same car wreck over and over again to me. A great bass sound, to me, is one that's happy being a bass, and not trying to take over the rest of the sound spectrum. I took up playing the bass because I love the "bump." If your sound doesn't bump, I ain't interested.
Sorry for the big manifesto, but that's the way I feel.
