Oversized round strap buttons (instead of straplocks)

It seemed like a miracle of common sense when the 1982 L-1000 I bought new sported bigger buttons with a flat inside. Since then, sometimes I install these type on other basses but most of the time I employ the old rubber Grolsch grommets (fail-proof unless you're a knucklehead).

^^^This is what I was going to recommend (although tbh I did not know they were bass string trees! but that makes sense). Whatever PRS uses on their guitars, they are the only* strap button I've ever used that didn't require any additional "assistance" (aka a Grolsch beer bottle washer)

Really? Were they stock? My 1982 Steinberger L-2 came with bog standard normal-sized strap buttons

The buttons aren’t a problem with the straps themselves. They are too large to use off the shelf plastic straplocks with. Making your own with rubber washers is possible.

The only time I've had trouble w/ straps disconnecting from basses was w/ strap locks. Never had an issue w/ standard issue strap buttons.
And my experience is the opposite...
I had two P basses in the late 80s hit the floor from the strap slipping off the standard Fender strap buttons.
Ever since then, I've been installing Dunlop straplocks on everything and have never had anything fall. I always make double sure the lock click when attaching the strap.

My only exception was my 64 & 65 Jazzes being all original, they were not basses I leaned on to gig with and only came out of the house once in a blue moon, I used the rubber washers on those two.

I dont remember anything spectacular about Grolsh beer, and none of my friends have ever brought it to any parties.

As a beer it is rather unremarkable. Drinkable, but nothing more.

However, as a FREE ACCESSORY that comes with every 4-pack of the distinctive red rubber straplocks, it is fabulous!!!

But yeah, impossible to find in the States these days.

I’ve fitted the Gotoh oversized buttons on both my basses and I prefer them.
Tried Schaller and didn’t like them and rubber washers made strap too tight on button.
The Oversized buttons are simple and work well with leather straps and move better ( not in the sense of coming off accidentally but move on the strap pin as it’s supposed too. So better than rubber washers in my opinion.
They look nicer too I think and I used the original screws that were used for the original strap button.
Gotoh make quality gear, I fit their bridges too on my basses )
