Oxidation on volume control

I have an Ibanez SG500. For the past several months I have had a scratching noise through the cabinet when I turn my volume knob. It sounds like there is oxidation building up on the control, so that when I turn the knob back and forth several times it rubs it off, so the noise goes away. It is getting louder, and returns overnight. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the volume control unit?

Replacing it is best, but in the meantime you can blow them out with "canned air" and clean/lube them with Caig products. More info here . Caig stuff is available at Radio shack and other electronic stores. There are other brands, but Caig is the industry leader. Do not use any other kind of spray, and yes, sadly, that includes WD-40. Be careful with the canned air, too - keep the can upright and don't shake it, or you could hit the pot with propellant and damage it.

You need access to the back of the pots to do this, so you'll have to open up the control cavity.

Use some De-Oxit. Clean all the pots while you're at it, not just the volume pot.
