P Ashtray on J?

I found an old thread where someone had talked about doing this...and they laid it out on their J and took pics, but never updated to say if it fit once he screwed it down....??

Has anyone else done this? I think I may if I can find out if it fits...

Thanks,
Josh

The J and P basses use the same bridge, so there's no problem putting a P bridge cover on a Jazz. But you will have to drill holes for it, as the ones for the J-bass cover are in a different place.
If your J has holes already drilled, that is.
I've seen this done before - in pics here on TB, but I can't remember what the thread was. It's probably not a bad idea if your Jazz gets banged around alot, but might leave something to be desired aesthetically. Definitely better than the useless (for me) J-bass cover.

Thanks, I thought the bridges were the same size...and there aren't already holes on it, so I'll be drilling into it for the first time. I am going to go with the P-Bass ashtray because frankly, I don't want the bridge pup covered AND the neck pup covered, I think that limits my access too much...but I think with the P ashtray it'll leave me more room to play either infront of the neck pup, or right in front of the bridge pup....

I saw the old thread where someone did it, and he had pics but I can't find the thread now...can't remember what I searched for...it was an old one though, from like 2008-09...

I gonna do it...ordering tomorrow...Pbass ashtray, pup cover, and tort guard...i'll put some pics up when I get them...

Thanks for the help!

I'm sure it's so you can take up the least amount of available playing space.
Sure why not. As long as your bass doesn't have any original holes it will be cleaner making your own new holes.
The front chrome pickup cover for the Jazz is narrower than the P chrome cover, so definitely use that.

I'm doin it...some people may not like the looks of it, but I do...and it won't get in my way as much as the bigger J ashtray...
I'll try it, and if I don't like it, I have a buddy with a P-Bass that would buy it from me...or I'll just hang on to it until I get a P....

Here's the pic of it that someone posted a while back:

I could be wrong but wasn't one reason why there were ashtrays on J's back in the day was that the metal ashtrays had some effect on the pickups (shielding, etc. - sorry, can't remember). Of course the other reason was to hide the string mutes. Granted that there was some "electronic" logic behind the ashtrays covering the bridge pups, you won't get that with the bridge pups still being exposed. As for the string mutes, do you plan to put them in? Otherwise, for these two reasons alone it'll just be for uniqueness or for aesthetic reasons only. Leave them off if you ask me, or do them right and use J ashtrays.

Actually, if you want to be unique you might want to consider putting a neck cover over the bridge pup.....but I'll still stick to a clean JB without the covers, or at most with the right neck and bridge covers.

I'm pretty sure 95% of the people putting these on these days are doing it for aesthetic reasons only...??

because it covers the bridge pickup and limits your access, the OP was quite clear.

I have a P bridge cover on a P/J, so why not on a J too? I'm with you on not liking the bridge pickup covered, I like access right over it. I think the P cover looks better anyway, go for it man!
That's what got me interested in the idea...was the fact that they are on P/J's too...

I've done it and it works fine.

Thanks
