Hi guys!

I have a question involving strings today!
I have a Squier Standard P-bass special with a P-neck added on (So it has a single coil P-bass pickup in the sweet spot and a jazz pickup at the bridge.)

I'd like to get a new set of strings for it, and I love that Roger Waters type bass tone (With the tone knob all the way up) out of a P-bass with a little bit of high-end and punch, with a little bit of umph. I also would like to have higher tension, but it's not required. I though of buying some flatwounds, but I'm not sure. Any questions?

Waters used Roto flats. There are lots of good flats, and just using Roto's won't assure you of getting his tone. You need to take into account the whole package as far as end tone is concerned.

I do like Roto flats, but I also like Fenders, and LaBella's as well. Chromes are also a nice flat. If I had to judge these flats side by side tonally, it would go like this.

Roto's: good top end, balanced, slightly upper mids, solid bottom, thumpy when broken in, high tension. med smooth wrap, polished

Fenders: Subdued top end, slightly twangy mids, thumpy solid bottom, high tension. Very smooth wrap, med satin finish

Chrome's: Similer to Roto's but not as much top end, very balanced throughout, break in nicely, solid lowend, med tension. med smooth wrap, satin finish

Labella's: Much darker than the others, but very musical. Very well balanced, Dark creamy flats, med tension, smooth wrap, high polish.

Waters tone to my ears is very woody sounding, with a not overly thumpy bottom, solid tight bottom. Slightly mid biased with a subdued rounded top end.

For a PJ bass, I would start with Fenders or Chromes.
