P Bass needs work/ good deal or not?

serial # puts it MIJ b/w '84 & '87. ok, it's missing the top two frets(bridge end), has a small crack in the body and has some loose wiring which causes loss of signal when cord is wiggled. Previous owner put in active EMG's, powered by a 9-volt under the cover plate. It's missing the pickguard, the knobs and a screw from the bridge.
However it IS a MIJ Fender P bass with a working truss rod and a decent(minus 2 frets) neck. All these repairs seem small and fixable. To me. At the price of $300, wouldn't I be a real fool to pass it up?
That is my question.
What would you do?
I go to check it out tomorrow.

I'd offer 200 for it. It'd hardly working,and missing major components

What is it going to cost to fix it, compare that to buying a MIJ P in playable condition and then reevaluate. Unless you can do the work yourself, you have at least a couple of hundred dollars work to be done...

Get him down to $250.

that's what I was thinking. Every thing's a simple fix except the frets, which I don't think i've ever actually reached for in my life anyway. I actually like the look of no pickguard and knobs are basically free. So, a little soldering and I'm good to go unless/until I decide I need the extra high notes.
Besides I never see real P's anywhere near that price.

It's an MIJ that has been defiled so basically it's no longer original and to top it off it needs work. Factor in the cost of having the repairs done and then re-evaluate... even if you could repair it all yourself at little or no cost your skills should benefit you, not the seller. IMHO the seller does not have a bass worth $300.
