P-bass or Jazz bass?

heres my take a precision bass is like the authority figure in the mix, it ties everything together sits just perfectly in the mix, it has such a dominant tone to it that it commands authority. Where as the jazz bass, it is more cut through the mix type of bass, it is more punchier and tighter sounding, also more smoother sounding, you tend to stand out in the mix more if you play jazz bass's. Both bass's will work for pretty much any gig that you are required to play. I own both kinds, i like the jazz and i like the precision, either one is a win win for me.

I agree with this. I have and use both regularly. The pbass is the binder, the jazz bass is more of another kind of role in the band, almost like another guitar, which is why jazzes can be hard to settle in to a mix (sometimes, not always of course).

As the OP said "Rock Band," I'll say "J"
I have P's, J's, quasi hybrids, dual humbuckers, single/double coil whatevers, thin necks thick necks.. basses in long term climate controlled storage someplace I've completely forgotten about...

I learned on a P then moved to a Jazz. I still love my P's but I think the transition was easier than going from a Jazz to a P.
