When I first got a P Bass in 1976 I used it strung with flats.
When I played an Elite Precision II in the 1980's I used it strung with rounds.
I no longer own a P Bass, but if I got one now I would definitely use flats.

Put some flats on your Pbass and give it a couple of weeks. Play along with some Motown hits or surf music. This is one of the most recognized and universal accepted sounds of our musical world. If you've never used them, a Pbass with flats can help shape your perspective and help you grow as a bassplayer.
BTW- I've got one with flats and another wtih rounds.

For a time I used to think I needed RWs on my P in order to be heard. No way. Good flats, keep your tone pot full on, and amp flat. Currently using TI's but have used most othere flats.

On my P I have GHS black nylon tape flats. Sounds warm and woody. On my Sad J5 I have the TI jazz flats. I have rounds on my Steinberger and my homebrew 6 string.
Gotta have some of each, but on a P.... flats for me.

I have Chromes on one of my fretlesses and I think they're pretty bright, even after being on the bass for well over a year. It's not a bass I use all the time, but I do play it. I've seen a lot of other people here comment on their relative brightness as well.

Kinda depends on the vibe you're shooting for. If you want that grindy pick tone, grab some rounds. If you want a more mellow sound, grab flats.

That about covers it.

Rounds for me because I like tube growl.

Gah. I can't stand the sound or feel of rounds. I can get plenty of grindy pick tube growl with my flats without that buzzy, clanky sound that rounds have.

When I bought my 1st Pbass (used) in '67, it was strung with flats . . . I used Fender flats (and a Fender heavy pick) up until about '75 or so.
When I changed to rounds (Rotosound "swing bass" at first) I continued using the pick AND the rubber mute that had worked so good in the studio . . . but that didn't last for long. I was soon using fingers (with the mute) and then fingers without the mute . . .

FWIW, I NOW use "newish" Carvin rounds (until they start to lose the "zing"), finger(s), pick(s), mutes . . . whatever the song needs . . .

My P's all wear flats, it's just the sound I like on those particular basses.

The rest of all my basses wear rounds.
