P Bass Revelation

Perhaps I’m an inadequate player….
My taste for tones hasn’t changed from when I played in the 70s to late 90s, took a break, and started playing again in 2011….
Passive P bass w/ rounds
Active Jazz bass w/ rounds
Stingray w/ rounds
Fretless with really old rounds.
The only significant “revelation” or “epiphany” (change) I’ve had and made is from 4-strings to 5s. I can think of worst sins to commit, in spite of what some of you may think

Funny… I had a similar experience. When I bought my first serious bass I got a J bass just because it felt better in my hands and I guess I just grew to prefer the sound of a J bass. 30 some-odd years later I recently bought a used Carvin bass with a PJ configuration and wondered why I never bought a P style bass before. While I still prefer the sound of a J, there’s a time a place for a good P sound as well.

Im old so Ive owned a ton of basses over the decades...always searching for something. Started off with a P bass but hated it cause my technique was terrible..I also had three early Rays but was never really happy, and Jazzes, Ibanezes? (no thks), Aria Pro II's then more P basses....never really happy.
An old bass playing associate died recently and back in the 70's he played a Walnut/Rosewood P bass...I always loved the look of it. His death re-kindled my memory and I bought a CV 70's P in Walnut. Ive never been happier, its perfect. Whether that's to do with age or technique I dunno but its re-invigorated my playing hugely and it genuinely sounds very good indeed....kinda woody and open, light too. Cheap. Perfect.
Been playing 40+ years and have just about played them all. I've comfortably settled into the Am Pro ll P. I did change the pup to an Arcane 65 and the strings to TI Flats. These basses have a fit and finish that rivals a Custom Shop Fender with much better ergonomics. I play rock, blues, country and funk. I'm through looking for my perfect bass....I've found it and it's less than half price of what I've been playing!
I too have been playing a PJ or P at rehearsal lately. Why, just to play something else than a Jazz??

That is a great looking Precision bass! Glad to hear it’s suiting you so well. So many different great basses out there, but sometimes a good old P bass will do exactly what you want, and it feels just great when you get into that zone. Wonderful instruments.
I had a similar experience. My 1960 original P Bass with flats is really a one trick pony, and coming from an Alembic which is the Swiss Army Knife of tone, I did not respect the Fender much. It took the right artist and music to open my eyes as to how appropriate and perfect the P Bass is in its element. Classic rock, Motown, and Country are where the bass really thrives. I did a gig last weekend where we were playing strictly classic rock tunes, and that '60 P Bass fit that gig like a hand in a glove. I had been of the mind that the P Bass was really just a session tool, but live, in the right musical environment, it totally worked, and changed my perspective about what a Fender can bring to the table.
Funny, right as I read "I'm a Believer" The Monkees tune was playing on YouTube and they sang it as I was reading it. Well, it amused me anyway.
You’re right, nobody else will notice that much, but if you sound good to you and it plays good to you, so what? You didn’t choose to be a bassist to be the centre of attention anyway. Just enjoy playing your music your way and don’t give a flying **** what anyone else thinks.
Could be the same pickup. Neck is definitely different.

Not entirely true…..his instruction video that’s a bass of doom w/precision neck & in da video he talks about how he brought precision neck while he is being interview….
