So my big night out tonight was a trip to the super market. As I was walking out, I walked by the neighborhood pawn shop. I'm not one to frequent pawn shops because I figure anyone with good gear knows better than to sell it in a pawn shop. So I don't bother with them. However, I looked in the window and saw a P bass type hanging in the back. I'm sure it's not even a good knock off. Probably one of those $50 things you see on evil bay. But it was far enough in the back that I couldn't really see it. But now I can't get it out of my head. My mind is running wild with "what ifs." Either way, I'm going in the morning. Luckily, it's right next to a music store and I already had a trip planned to pick up some cables for my new sonic maximizer that I got today. So I'll check it out in the morning. I'll report back with my findings...

I know the feeling....

I recently peeked in the window at a local pawn shop after hours and waaay in back, spotted what I thought was a sunburst Gibson ripper.

Went back the next day and discovered that it was indeed a Gibson, but a G-3. I got all excited then saw the price...$895. I thought ok, they have a layaway plan and I can talk them down so I'll take a look. Awesome shape, nearly scratch n' ding free.

But....

I just don't think I could get over the bowed neck that made it look a bit more like a harp than a bass.

Yeah I'm sure I won't find that once in a lifetime '62 P-bass with a neck like butter for $300 because the guy running the joint just moved to this country and he comes from a land where no one knows about bass guitar. I'm just not that guy. I'm sure it's a horrible knock off. But I have to check it out. If I don't, it will be the '62 P-bass with a neck like butter.

Never pass up a pawn shop! You gotta be frugal, yet vigilant. The best deals will come from the wierdest places. Even good musicians develop debilitating crack habits and have to sell off their gear for a hit. Hooray crack! :hyper:

Just as I suspected...it wasn't even an "ok" knockoff. There wasn't a name on the head, so I have no idea what brand it was. The neck was bowed so bad I could have shot arrows with it. The guy told me (without me asking) that he could let it go out the door for $200, even though the asking was $225. I laughed as I was walking out. I then walked into the music store next door (just discovered it a few days ago.Today was the first time I've been in there) I needed a few 1/4 cables for some rack garbage. It was then that I remembered why I stay out of the mom and pop shops; 3ft. 1/4 cables: $11.50 each! On the rare trip out to GC (aka the Devil) I've gotten them for like $5 and some change. Same as MF, except you gotta wait a few days from MF. Either way, no more mom and pop shops for me. I'm all about supporting the locals, but not when they stick it to me like that.

I would like to have a good one in my area. ANd maybe I do and just don't know about it yet. But until I find it, I guess its MF for me.

I just was blessed. Sure, I have to drive 20 minutes out of town, but the trip is worth it. I mean, it's not the fancy type of shop, it's dusty, old, filled with vintage 1950's amps and guitars, and basses...It's a real treat. Keep searching! I was tipped off to this gem of a store from my psychology teacher back in highschool.

sadly, MF is the most economical choice for your everyday needs...but man, if I just had some serious $$$, I would buy up every vintage piece of gear at Tony's store.

Sometimes I get lucky, and I see his Harley Davidson outside :D
