Your GAS list has a Fender Jaguar on it. Why not just get that? It's like a J on steroids.

I went with a Fender Aerodyne for my first Fender bass. P/J pickup configuration gives you a p-bass sound with the option of a jazz sound... sorta. It has the feel of a Jazz bass, but it's lighter, and looks killer. I must mention though that I recently picked up a Geddy Lee Jazz bass to get the authentic jazz sound, as the sound of a P pickup mixed with a J pickup isn't quite as punchy and funky as a blend of two Jazz pickups, and I may very well get a P bass eventually, as the Aerodyne's light weight, jazz shaped body doesn't quite get the clunk and thump that a true P can get, but I love the Aerodyne none-the-less.

That's a much of own taste question, I prefer P-Bass, but I also love the Jazz bass, it's kinda of what suits the best for you. Just try both and see how you feel and how it would fit into your band.

Which bass sounds better with elevator cables strung? I just got jumbo lump crab frets from Allparts and want to screw them into my bass neck, but I need to know which one is best suited with elevator cables.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that there aren't too many P vs J threads. As this argument has been going on without a definitive answer for years, I think it's a valid question. It's a question that needs to be discussed.

We should probably just sticky a Precision vs Jazz megathread at the very top of the forum with a detailed layman's faq of the differences (nut size, pickups, etc) and similarities as the first post. Maybe also add in the Jaguar, Stingray, and Thunderbird for illustrative purposes...

yes, indeed. The same goes for the squier classic vibe basses. I recommended this ti the OP a few posts ago.
I think, when you don't know if you want a P or a J, the best is to buy both at lower price and eventually buy a "nicer one" later.
