P bass vs RIC

Honestly anything will work for metal with the right EQ'ing and amp setup. I'm not sure I sould use a Beatle Bass, though.

In my opinion, the best bass for anything is the one you're most comfortable playing/hearing.

There is no rule stating that you have to sound like another bass player. Have some fun and develop your own sound.

You can't really go wrong with either IMO. For me, i chose the Ric. I like its distorted/overdrive tone better. I have also had a P and loved it.

The Precision is one of the best ever bass designs. The pickups, hardware are built to last forever. The body fits nicely. The bass holds pitch. With Fender there's potential to find that magic neck. The P is more comfortable than the Rick.

The Rickenbackers, probably because of the shorter scale, seem to sustain more. I think the design and craftsmanship of the 4003 is a little better than the Precision. Rickenbacker's finishes have always been beatiful imo. Their wood is better.

The pickups, electronics and bridge hardware of the Rick aren't too my liking. That metal is uncomfortable. And the bridge is a bear to intonate.

Here's an idea - what if you were to play them both and then listen to what you are playing and then decide for yourself instead of asking a bunch of strangers who may or may not know what they are talking about???

I have both and I would say that the P bass is the superior design and sounds better in the vast majority of cases. Ricks have a situational appeal, a niche, because they're great for a particular type of sound. They have that trebly chainsaw bass thing locked down. That might make it seem good for metal, but I would still choose the P. It does a way better job of anchoring the band while still retaining its own identity in the mix.

Hmm...with EB-0 and jazz pickups I wonder how much like a Rick cliff's bass really sounded. Under all the effects I mean. He might not be the best guy to serve as a ringing endorsement.

I only loved my 4003 after modding it a lot as well, which is kind of a backhanded compliment.
