I only loved my 4003 after modding it a lot as well, which is kind of a backhanded compliment.

The best Ricks are the modded ones ... the same is true for the p-bass.

A Ric can cop a pretty good P bass tone. A P bass cannot cop a Ric tone. Ric's are plenty versatile, they look great, and the play really nicely. But they aren't for everyone. You'd better try and get hands on before making your final decision. My vote goes to the Ric. But then again I hate P basses

It also depends on your budget Rics don't come cheap and when it comes to repairs I wouldn't trust it with someone who hasn't worked on one.

I don't find my 2011 RIC is lacking in bottom end at all... as a mater of fact, I find myself cutting some bottom as it just thunders...
Newer RICs with the push pull tone circuit are much more robust than earlier 4003's and 4001's.
I won't try to convince you to pick either instrument, that's your personal decision, but I do have to let you know about my RIC experience.

You can't ask "What Bass is Best for Metal"

...but you CAN ask: "Ric or P - which is best for metal"


I call Bull for this thread being allowed to exist when 1,000,000 future metal heads have not been allowed to ask.

(sort of an Abby Hoffman in front of The Who type feeling/vibe for me at this point -)

But, instead of warning lights and Red Alerts I'll just give the answer...

P-Bass all day and all night long....Not only because it sounds better....

Ya owning both is easy except for the thousands of dollars you have to spend.

I am not rich , and managed to save up . I paid $1200 for my Ric , it was a market price for a used one at the time . It's probably worth more now .

You can spend anywhere from $200 to $10,000 on a Pbass . I have acquired three of them over the years . All quite different .

IMO the Ric beats a standard fender P all day (especially witha pick and rotosounds) as far as that hot metal sound,but a P-bass with quarter pounders is just as good if not better than a ric,especially with your fingers.

I could derail this thread with pick vs fingers too.
