I know this subject has been beat to death here, but I still can't find a satisfactory answer. I hope someone has a good solution.
I have a Chinese P/J which I installed Fender MIM P & J pickups. It has 4 knobs all 500k wired as VTVT. The second tone control is just redundant in my experience. Two tones on the stock circuit do the exact same thing. Is there any really good way to utilize that extra tone control? I can read and follow a schematic and rewire to one if anyone has a good one to try.
I've considered turning the 4th tone into a master volume straight out to the output jack, or using a different capacitor so it rolls off at a different rate then the other tone control. Maybe even using the hole to add a switch and just remove the pot? I like the sound I get from basically using it VVT, but I came from a 6-string guitar background where the wiring makes sense with a blade switch. No room for a blade switch in this cavity, so I can't do that. I just can't stand having that redundant tone control. I enjoy moding stuff, so even if it's a crazy idea I'd like to hear it.
